It's absolutely fine to simply serve cake and coffee, maybe also have punch for those non-coffee drinkers, or at least water. You are not required to serve a full meal. Just remember though, if your reception is around a meal time, people will kind of automatically assume you're feeding them, but avoid that by scheduling it for a non-meal time (3 or 4 in the afternoon works). Congrats and good luck!

It really depends on the time of day, people tend to "expect" a meal at around lunch or dinner time, so if you have your reception around mid-afternoon you should be fine, especially if you are having a short reception. Or if you have your reception after dinner time then that would also be fine. Have some water and juice as well as a lot of people do not drink coffee. You may find that if you have your reception around a meal time then people will get hungry and leave early to get something to eat.

marriage should be a one great event. For both the man and the woman. Just cake and coffee is too tacky. Don't rush into it. Try to do a meal. example 30 people at 10.00 dollars a plate is about 300.00 that is not a lot of money to a car sales lot, they give 50 to 100 dollars for referals, thats 30 potential customers. lack money you get "sponsors". Example, get a big car sales lot to sponsor the meal. That means they pay for the meal but you also will include their name to your guess. The meal and entertainment is usually the father's and mother's responsibility of the bride. The only thing the man pays is his own tux and the ring. Both sides of parents pay for the furniture in the new couples house. The bedroom furniture by the husbands parents. The kitchen furniture by the wife's parents, the living room furniture divided in half. Some times the husbands parents buy the ring. for the couple.
If it is a small reception, you can suggest that both parents pay for the meal and both parents give the husband the money. its all about family and life time marriage, remember that.

Cake and punch is all my fiance and I were planning on serving at our reception. However some people have offered to make mints for us, so we may add nuts or something. It's a BIG money saver! I would also suggest something besides coffee, because I know you'll probably have some who won't like it or wish to drink it with cake.
Congrats and Good Luck!

It depends on lots of factors:
style of wedding
size of wedding
time of day
etc
If is it an informal wedding and is an afternoon event then you can serve: cake, coffee, punch, nuts, etc but do not need a full blown meal.

If it is an evening reception 4pm or later, you need to serve full meal. Coffee and cake is only appropriate if it is in the afternoon. Trust me, I have heard horror stories about guets leaving to go get food because they were hungry. Also if you are having alcohol, you need for people to eat or it could get ugly

Cake and coffee....I like that idea! Thanks :)
I think it would only work if you had a short reception with not as many people...Maybe have a few other things to eat there as well...not full meal sort of stuff but little appetizers...finger foods yanno...

that's entirely up to you. if it's going to be a long reception then you may want to at least have some appetizers or something out. if it's going to be a fairly short reception then cake and coffee is ok.

No... I think that's fine. That is actually a smart thing to do. Saves a lot of money! But if there are going to be children maybe serve some juice.
