I've heard Toronto compared to New York (multicultural with a big business center) and Montreal to San Fransisco (vibrancy and joie-de-vivre). Calgary has some of LA's soullessness and its summers may be comparable to LA's winters...Windsor is the Las Vegas-wannabe.

The big difference between Canadian and American cities is that Canadian cities keep vibrant downtown cores (Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto) because of the lower crime rates vs American cities tend to become donut cities where the centre is empty (except fur business) but the suburbs thrive and develop.

Vancouver and Seattle are definitely a match (port city, close to mountains, ties to Asia), Toronto could be matched to Chicago (financial centre, on a Great Lake, sport cities) although TO is way more multicultural and has less interesting architecture. Finally, Montreal has always been matched to Boston because of the similar city sizes (3,000,000 each), surrounded by water and historical heritage. Although there are tons of other similarities/difference between I can think of, this is what comes top of mind having visited all the mentioned cities.

Vancouver and Seattle very similar. Both are beautiful, green, clean, situated on the ocean, similar architecture etc. Both have interesting ethnic communities within the city. Because of the similarities between the 2 cities ( size, location, busy ports etc.) both would experience similar problems. Also, because of the difference in gun laws between the US and Canada the incidences of gun crimes in Seattle would be much higher than Vancouver. Oh and people love their coffee in Seattle and Vancouver too!
