I have this really good friend that has confided in me and she wants me to try to help her. Before I get started, please no stupid, smart butt or rude comments. This is a serious question and I am trying to help put. Ok so here is the deal, she is 26 years old and she told me that she has wet the bed and this before like 4 or 5 years ago. She thinks that she needs to go see a doctor. Can anyone shed some light on this matter. She is really upset about this.

If it's only happened twice in five years, she probably doesn't have too much to worry about -- LOTS more adults have this happen occasionally than you might think! A good percentage of adults regularly need to get up to go to the bathroom during the night (I think it's like 20-25%), and if she's in that group, it's not unheard of on an *occasional* night -- especially when one is really tired or stressed -- to be too sound asleep to wake up in response to the "full bladder" signal, and so the bladder overflows and wets the bed. If it's just an isolated and rare occurrence, most likely nothing's seriously wrong -- just that night her body happened to produce more urine than her bladder could handle, and for whatever reason she was too sound asleep to wake up. Most adults who experience this, like your friend, are probably really ashamed and/or embarrassed about it and so most don't say anything to anyone about it, which is why most people don't realize how common it is.

She could go to a doctor if she really needed to for her peace of mind, but unless it starts happening really frequently all of a sudden (which could indicate an infection or some other medical issue), they probably won't find anything wrong with her except possibly a bladder that's a touch smaller than average. Limiting fluids late at night (not cutting them off completely, but just to a reasonable level), and making sure her bladder is empty the very last thing before going to bed, could help to make this less likely, although in people who are prone to it, there's really no foolproof way of preventing it -- still, two "accidents" in 5 years is not that bad, in the grand scheme of things.

For the record, I'm a 29 year old guy and still have occasional problems with this -- presently it happens to me maybe once every month or two on average, but it's been worse in the past at times when i've been really stressed.

I hope this covers what you wanted to know... but if there's any other information you want, feel free to click on my profile and email me (or have your friend do so)... I'll be happy to try to help in whatever way I can.

Absolutely she could go see a doctor. It certainly won't hurt!

I don't understand part of the question, but if she's been doing it consistently for 4 or 5 years, ONE possibility is she may have a sleep issue (she sleeps so deeply that she doesn't wake up when her bladder is full) One solution might be to set a very quiet alarm (like a digital watch) to go off in the middle of the night. It may wake her up just enough to realize she has to go. Eventually she will form a sleep pattern around the alarm and she won't need it any more.

If your saying that she's wet the bed twice in 5 years, the same answer applies, but the cause for her deep sleep may be an environmental thing, like a cold medicine, or a stressful situation.

If she is only wetting it every 4./ 5 years? i would say its nothing to worry about, could be she is really tired and in a deep sleep and imagines she has got out to the loo.
