It's symbolic. We were created with His four attributes, love, justice, wisdom and power. All humans have these qualities but because we are imperfect we doesn't use them very well. But isn't it a delight when we meet one of those special people who have a true sense of justice and honor, who loves those around them and treats everyone with respect and uses their intelligence to help others. They seem like angels. But with God's help we will all be like that.

And God created man in , in created He him; male and female created He them.
Man was pure, like God, at one time. This is the likeness. The body was also not meant to die...Eve and Adam changed this.

He looks human except without any sin at all ever. He is pure .
All Gold. All silver. No drouse. He is a bright shining light so bright that in these bodies we live in if we were to see God we would decinerate. No man has ever saw God and lived. That is why we will recieve new bodies when we go to be with Him. For we will be like Him. It will be the greatest High that man will ever know.

When the Bible says that we are made in Gods own image it's referring to our mindset. Humans are the only part of creation who can reason and use logic. It has nothing to do with our physical appearance.

Not all believers in God believe that He created us in his own image, whether or not it's just symbolic. Only Christians believe that...

Think about it.
If god made us in HIS image, then we look like HIM, not the other way around, right?
Your question might read: "If God made us in his own image, do we look divine?"
Personally, I dont believe in God, but I thought your question deserved a thoughtful response.

God created man and a woman. So in the normal way we are one of them only. In these cases there are abnormal developments where while the mind and brain is that of a woman, the body develops as a man , especially the genital is So what in sex operations happens that they change these to make them in accordance with the mind. It is finally the mind and brain that makes the person and not the body in itself. That is why sex-operation is possible, and that is why people like these describe themselves as being in a cage because they think and feel like a woman while their body is more like that of a man. Gods looks at the soul which is the mind and will and not at the sex.

"God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." John 4:24
We are made in His spiritual likeness. That's not symbolism exactly, it's just a different sort of likeness than what first comes to mind.

the image that God made us in his emotions. God made us in his image of relationships and love, not looks. If that's the case, we'd all look alike I guess...

The image is our soul. It is neither male or female. It is a spirit.
