Why are toasters marked for single slices?

Does it really matter wich side you put the single slice in?

The "ONE SLICE" slot is where the toaster's thermostat is, so yeah, it matters.

if your ganna toast only one bread its best if you put it whare its marked to keep it from popping up after just puting it down. the single sliced side has a locking mechenisim
