I have one who still hates to wear a coat. I had another who couldn't - just seemed physically impossible - for her to wear a matched pair of socks.
I put my foot down about it when it concerns health and well being. If he doesn't want to wear socks, then let him go sockless. However, put the sandals away - hide them if you need to - and tell him that he can not wear socks if he likes, but he WILL wear regular shoes during the cold weather. He throws a temper about it, punish the temper tantrum.
My younger will only wear short socks and we set a rule that if it is below 30 degrees he MUST wear his coat. Or he'll be late for school and have to bear the punishment of it, since I won't excuse his lateness - I can always outwait him.
Compromise on some things, be firm on the others. basically, you need to be the parent first no matter how much you and he don't like it.

Well I go sockless in my sneakers almost all the time in the Winter, and I been wearing my sneakers without socks since I was about your son's age, but a little bit younger (now I am 34) and I never had any serious problems. The only major problem I had was stinky sneakers and feet. I love kids dearly even though I don't have any. If you son was my son, I would allow him to go sockless, but for the sandals, I would take them away, and put them in the closet in your bedroom, so he can't get at them. Let him wear his sneakers without socks if he wants to, his feet is probably used to the cold by now (If you say it is 20'F by you right now), and his feet are probably getting tougher and his feet are probably not cold at this time. Believe it or not, some sneakers do keep your feet even warmer if you don't wear socks. There are a lot of kids you son's age that do wear their sneakers without socks, (I see it all the time) some grow out of it, and some will continue to do it. IF I were you, I would contunue allowing him not to wear socks in his sneakers without socks, so there is no arguements, and spray his sneakers with a foot odor spray, and make sure his feet are washed daily, that way there is no odor in the house from his feet and sneakers. Buy him a second pair of sneakers so he can rotate them, and not wear the same pair 2 days in a row, that way the sneaker can air out, because it takes a good 48 hours for sneakers to dry out completely from not wearing socks in them. (I have been rotating my sneakers for ages) If you feel you need to do so, talk to his teacher about the situation, and check with his classmates, and see if they are wearing their sneakers without socks, he may be picking up this habit in school. KIds do pick up habits quickly these days. The only way I can see this being a problem is if he is in a situation where he needs to take off his shoes. One reason he may not like wearing socks in the Winter time is because when he walks in the snow his socks would get all wet, and his feet would get wet, and he would need to take off his socks. (Personal expierence I had in the past) I have a pair of sneakers that I wear without socks all the time, and they keep my feet nice and warm, and my feet are never cold. I wore them a week ago Sunday, and I shoveled snow while wearing them, and the snow got on my ankles, but did not get into the sneaker. My feet were still nice and warm when I went back in the house. When I would shovel while wearing socks, my socks would be soaking wet when I finish.
I am suprised Chuck E Cheese allowed him to go into the fun park with the ball pit, and it was a good thing nobody else seen him besides yourself, because most places frown at being barefoot. The next time you go to a such place, bring along a pair of socks (he does not have to wear them with his sneakers) and put them on his feet before he enters the fun park and he can take them right off when he is done playing in the fun park. Being barefoot in the fun park is unsanitary, and it is also a state regulation. AT McDonald's they have a fun park, and there is a sign posted on the wall stating that socks must be worn at all times. Otherwise, they will not be allowed in the park. They also sell socks for about $2.00/pair.
I wish you luck

Nothing wrong with going without socks. Sandals are much better for the feet, they allow his feet to breathe. If he's otherwise dressed warmly he's not gonna catch a cold that quick, especially not inside at Chuck e Cheese or other indoor venues.

Let him go without socks (except chuck e cheese, I think you have to have socks according to the rules) What is the big deal?
You think he is going to get frostbite? Socks really don't keep your feet much warmer (unless they are thermal socks). And really they just stop your shoes from getting stinky.
Pick your battles, never engage in a battle you can't win. And this one you can't win because as soon as he is away from you he will take them off.

sounds like you are more worried about what other people say to you than your son's comfort. I have a son that doesn't like socks because they make his feet sweat and that can make you colder.he likes his sandals too. What kind of socks are they? are they cotton? cotton is best and not itchy like the polyester can be. he must be uncomfortable with them or else he would wear them. Ask him.

Jeez, they're just socks. Why does it really matter? He's obviously comfortable. He'll wear socks when he wants to.
Save the battles for big things like "My son won't stop doing crack, what should I do?"

You can step up and put some authority into this child's life. MAKE him wear the socks. He's 10 yrs. old and already in control of you...better stop that before it gets worse.

Put your foot down, no pun intended. Take his sandals away. Tell him he is to wear socks with his shoes, or he will lose privileges. Explain to him that you care about his well being, that you love him, that it is winter and that he is GOING to wear socks or you will buy him some girls tights.

You are the ruler in your castle. Make him. Plain and simple. He will "hate" you for many things over the course of his life but the get over it.
