My cats always take up residence on our mat, folded clothes or books.

If it is a flat, clean, warm and better yet - soft surface, the cat will sit on it and claim it. If the surface comes with a view - the cat will take residence on it. If you show the flat surface with a view undue interest, the cat will pee on it to emphasize that it is taken and you go get your own flat, clean, warm soft surface with a view. Cats rule.

My cat is the same. He does not like to lay in an open area but rather with a buffer such as clothing or books. I think they find comfort or some kind of security from laying on items. For humans, it's like having someone to cuddle and for cats, it's our objects or things.

I'm not sure, but if I fold laundry my cat tries to get into the basket. Or if something is laying on the floor he lays on it, it could be a dvd case, phone book or anything. I have no idea.

I'm not sure. I have two cats, and the tabby loves to sleep on my coat, and she and the calico both love to sleep on paper (newspaper, my homework, school books, etc.).

I don't know I used to have one that loved my algebra textbook. I tried to use it as an excuse not to do homework but no one would buy it.
