I suffer severe depression about 3 times a year and moderate depression about once a month.

I recommend lots of sunshine. No kidding. When I lived in areas that were gray in the winter (Boston and Dayton) I found I suffered more extended depression.

Stay away from people who only complain. Stay away from the evening news. Again, this is my personal experience. If you are an empathetic person, hearing awful stories or from people who only see the negative, it will bring your mood down a notch.

Stay away from processed sugars. The physical and emotional crash after will bring you down a notch.

Start a physical fitness regimen. I play soccer and jog. The endorphins help tremendously to help take the edge off the more severe bouts of depression. I find that the exercise helps, and the companionship of the team sport is usually refreshing.

Laugh often. No kidding, just the act of laughing even for no reason sometimes can help. It can't hurt.

Tell yourself often that anything that doesn't kill someone or cost you a years pay isn't worth sweating over. Stress from work, relationships, and the world in general just isn't as important as we make it out to be most of the time. We shouldn't let life affect our moods.

I know this sounds awful, but sometimes when I get just a little down I think about how terrible other people in the world have it. Imagine living in Baghdad now, or in Rowanda about a decade ago, or in areas hit by any number of natural disasters or wars. As bad as life may look for any of us, there are people living through worse and making things work.

Above all, keep your chin up and think happy thoughts. I know it is hard, but your brain is the strongest part of your body and you are strong enough to overcome this.

When I have anxiety, I use Rescue Remedy. It made by Bach's and you can get it at Health Food stores. It is a blend of differnet all natural ingretients in a little glass bottle with a dropper. You can carry it with you and when you feel some anxiety coming on, just squirt it in your mouth. The taste is really strong, I chase it with a gulp of water. Not too much or it will water down the medicine. You should try it.

St. John's Wort (over-the-counter) is supposed to help one to have a "healthy mind" People have used it for depression, etc.

Melatonin (OTC, also) is a natural remedy for sleep--even those with rotating shifts or jet lag use it successfully.

Valerian Root (also OTC) helps to relax people, and many find it a great tranquillizer.

Meditation, music (as you said), yoga, fresh air and exercise, a healthy diet, enough water, etc. all help the mind, as well as the body.

B Complex + C Vitamins are very good to use--they are sometimes called "Stress Formula"

Lavender aromatherapy is successful in relaxing people, and sometimes helping them sleep. You'll find it in candles, soaps, air fresheners, incense, etc.

Chamomile tea is used by many also for relaxation and/or sleep.

Always read labels carefully. Even OTC remedies can be dangerous if used with certain other drugs (prescription or non)

Check these out--also check out self-help books from the library. Additionally there are relaxation tapes (video and audio).
