I plugged in my details at HR Block and then Citzen Tax. The refunds were $1000 off! I am on a very tight budget and this tax refund is a lifeline. I want to make sure I get the most back. My w2s were: Job 1: 13610.84, federal income tax withhead: 1955.90
Job 2. 14990.40, fed. income tax withheld" 1823.96 Job 3. 278., fed tax: 18.00

I am also eligible for that $40 phone credit.

Why is my refund coming up only at $2645? Shouldn't I get almost all of it back? I am married filing jointly and my spouse doesn't have an income.

My total income for 2006 was 28600.94
with unemployment 2658.00 with 270.00 withheld.

Can someone please give me a ballpark figure? Did I go wrong by filing married jointly? HELP.

Here's a ballpark figure, based on these assumptions:

You can legitimately file married. You have no children/dependents. Your husband had no income.
Your total income was about $30,000 gross and you've had withheld about $4,000. You were born AFTER Jan 2, 1942.

Looking at the long form 1040 line 22 and 37 and 38 are $30,000.

You get to subtract $10,300 (standard deduction, line 40) and $6,600 (2 exemptions, line 42, you and hubby) giving you

taxable income of $13,100 (line 43); your tax would be $1,308 (the 10% range for your filing status, page 84, and page 68 table), implying you'd get $2692 of your $4000 federal w/h back. (The $40 {line 71} credit would of course increase that to $2732.)

I think u went wrong when filed jointly because she has no income and there is no way to prove it so u should file married but not jointly try that and see what the diff is and if u get more back. go with the one that give s u the most back. Hope this helps.
