Interesting question - I never really gave it much thought, but you rarely see different breeds withing a subspecies crossbreeding in the wild. For instance, brown bears mate with brown bears and black bears mate with black bears - they don't intermix. I don't know why, but I believe they have an innate instinct to preserve their own race.
