Try Dana Point, which is just south of Laguna or Irvine, to the north (Irvine Spectrum area is closest to the main road that takes you into Laguna. There are several hotels around there because it is more of a business district). Try shopping around for hotel deals in Laguna. It might be cheaper if you are willing to not be right on the main beach road (Pacific Coast Highway). It also depends on when you are planning your visit. Summer is high season, so it is expensive. If you come in the off season, you will find some great deals. Good luck!!

Getting to Laguna Beach is not expensive if you use public transit. The OCTA (Orange county bus system) runs a really great bus service (route 1) that travels down Pacific Coast Highway all the way from Long Beach through Orange County and stops at the San Diego county line all for $1 There is a primary stop in Laguna Beach with easy access to other areas of the city. Rooms are a bit more reasonable further north along the coast in Huntington Beach or south in San Clemente. God Luck!

You can stay in nice hotels in Irvine, parts of Newport Beach, or Costa Mesa and rent a car to get to Laguna Beach.
Huntington Beach is also a fun place to stay and visit, but it's farther away from Laguna. I wouldn't stay there if you plan to go to Laguna Beach more than once, but if you do stay there, the drive to Laguna down PCH is beautiful and scenic.

You may try Palm Beach. I have heard it is real nice. It is about a 20 minute drive from Laguna.

also an interesting side note Laguna Beach is the only city
in orange county with its only municipal bus service
(all the other cities in Orange county just have OCTA operated services)
