Does it do anything or are they just doing it for fun?

No..you do not need to throw a pizza dough..it is for entertainment purpose only..My restaurant makes pizzas on a daily basis..and has never thrown a pizza yet.

I guess it would be fun but i don't throw mine around because i don't want to drop it. They just have the talent to do that i don't know what it does for the dough. I love good pizza.

It does stretch the dough and make a thinner crust. And there's a certain amount of showmanship involved too. But it's not necessary.

no is not necessary, the purpose of that is to stretch the dough, you can do the same by using a rolling pin or stretching it with your hands on your working table.

you can do it with a rolling pin but it is more fun to toss!
