Hello, I am 21 and I am thiniking of joining the navy. I have tried to ask navy personel my questions but they did not give me a direct answer, so I thought I would try my luck here. My question is about advanced rank.

I have recently completed a career diploma from PCDI in PC Technician, I also have my A+ certification and I was in JROTC for 3 years in High School.
I want to know if I qualify for advance rank in the Navy, i have heard of people going into boot camp as an E-2, E-3 and even as high as E-4. Can you tell me if I am able to get advance rank? if, so How high can I get?

Thanks for answering :)

While in Bootcamp everyone has the rank of seaman recruit. When you graduate bootcamp, depending on your MOS, you will be given a rank.

For example, If you are going to be an Electronics Technician you will be given a E-3 rank (Seaman), and on completion of ETA School you will be advanced to E-4 (Petty Officer 3rd Class). I have never heard of anyone getting advanced rank for civilian knowledge with two exceptions. One is officers with a specialty, such as a doctor or lawyer or if you held a rank of E-4 or above in another branch of the military before enlisting in the Navy....

E-1 through E-3 you just do what you are told and do it well.

Pick a rate that suits your talents, do the Navy school and pass in the TOP 1-2. Your background should help a TON.

NOBODY goes to BC as an E-4 unless they have previous service and an established RATE.

The deal with becoming an NCO is knowledge and LEADERSHIP skills.

Maybe it is different now, but I doubt it.

My suggestion is to do BC as a grunt like the rest of us did. Get your first assignment and STUDY. EVERY SAILOR is a SAILOR before they become a computer wizard. Learn the knots, terms and what it takes to become a SEAMAN E-3 and become a striker in your chosen rate.

Pass the test in the top quadrant and become an NCO E-4 that specializes in a specific field (I was Operations and Intelligence). Do the required TIG (time in grade) and take the next test and up the ladder you go.

I made E-5 in less than four and was offered E-6 if I re-enlisted and PASSED THE TEST.

I got some plum assisgnments (ADMIRALS staff and others), never had a quarterly mark below 3.4 and received special training.

NOTHING is FREE in the NAVY! If you get "special treatment" you will have leadership issues that will be HARD to overcome. You MUST EARN the respect of those that you lead!

You sound like you should go in as an E-1 and learn what you DON'T KNOW before you start calculating rank.

Hi,
I am in the Navy now and was a Navy Recruiter until last year. Here is the answer to your question as I see it. First, is PCDI a technical school or an accredited college or university. If you say technical school, then no, you get nothing, but your JROTC time may get you e-2. If you can get a friend to join after you are already on the Delayed Entry Program (DEP)(the period of time in between when you sign the contract and when you actually show up for basic training), then you can get another paygrade.

Perhaps you can look at it this way. You have experience/knowledge that already puts you ahead of your peers. If you are dead set on getting into that field, then join and let your knowledge be the catalyst for fast advancement, you will move up fast. If you are opend minded about career field, then there are ratings in advanced electronics and nuclear power that will get you far in the civilian world when you are finished and will get you advanced paygrade (E-5, after training) just from picking those fields(after a qualifying ASVAB score).

Since your education is technical in nature it's hard to say. You'll have to go to a recruiter and have him evaluate it.

With your training you would likely qualify for the Navy's Advanced Electronics Field. You'd enlist for 6 years. You go in as an E-3 and are advanced to E-4 immediately following your graduation from the Electronics Technician (ET) "A" School.

In the Advanced Electronics Program you get both an "A" School and a "C" School right out of Boot Camp. You'll probably spend 6 to 9 months in school after Boot Camp and before going out to the fleet.

You might also qualify for the Navy's Nuclear Power Program. They need Electronics Technicians there too. It's a 6 year enlistment with immediate advancement to E-4. In this program you'll spend about the first 2 years in school.

In either program, by the time you got out to the fleet, you'd be ready to test for E-5 or as an E-5 already.

If you have 45 college credits you can get E-3. If you don't have that many, your credits plus JROTC might get you E-3. You can't get E-4 out of boot camp as far as I know.
