Believers in God do community work and the likes, so that they are doing "Gods" deeds. Get into heaven etc etc

Whereas non believers do it to better the world, and know that nothing will come of it, but making others happy.

Does that sound about right?

exactly...basically while doing their service to community like donating to food banks and yada yada christians are looking up at the sky thinking about the brownie points they are getting

(oh I cant wait to see all the judgmental thumbs downs)

the non believers I meet are always way nicer to me than the believers...at least when i am around non believers I am not being condemed to hell every 5 seconds...
I am, like going to hell because I am a good person and take care of my kids, I dont harm others, I treat everyone the way I would want to be treated...and I am the one who is going to hell?

That is just ignorance it doesn't matter why a good deed is done. All that matters is it is done. To say Christians are only doing good deeds to get into heaven. That isn't true either. And if you think about it Atheists do many good deeds for prestigious purposes. But that's ok too. Why shouldn't the person doing the good deed get something out of it. What have you did lately?

No - I think most people do community work because they like the feeling it gives them and hopefully they see a positive result from the people they are helping. Non-believers are not necessarily more giving just because they don't expect a reward from God. They just see the good that they do having a different impact. Believers are not all shallow enough to only do volunteer work to get into God's good graces. I'm sure they enjoy making others happy as well. If anyone volunteers and doesn't feel better inside, they may want to check their motivations.

This is coming from a non-believer.

I don't like your thought towards this. Not all believers in God do works, etc. etc. to please God. Maybe they realize hmm I'm actually helping people and thats good. Some people don't even intergrate God into their lives.

This (your statements) does not sound about right.

There are so many more factors missing from this question I won't even state them. Okay a few so you don't think oh she has nothing when I actually do. Okay you can be a non-believer and do all those works and things for......reputation, false advertising of self (like to a boss or just on your resume because or to a crush because they are interested in those things).

Or you could have a Christian doing it because it is a good thing and/or your brown nosing. What Christianity is, is to do good things for God but it won't give you free access pass. People realize then hey this is good just in general too.

But in usual God believeing religions you do that because God wants you too and because its good. Its a nice thing for people who have unfortunate lives.

Nope... doesn't sound right.

Most Christians don't believe that doing good works gets you into heaven or earns points with God. The reality is the bible talks about Grace. Grace is the act of God allowing ANYONE (even you) to be forgiven and come to live with Him for eternity because of HIS goodness not yours... doesn't even matter what kinda trash you've ever done. It's never about earning favor with God.

In fact, the first thing you have to admit as a Christian is that you could never be "good enough" for God. So these people that think that if they give so much money, or do this or that.. that it's going to get them a free ticket to heaven mock God by assuming that they could even for a second of their life be good enough for Him on their own.

Granted, Christians do good works... but in this case, it's the consequence of learning about God's love. Jesus said, "If you love me, you'll keep my commands"... Imagine there are two guys in two cars, driving down the highway... they are both bragging about how much they love donuts... They see a sign for a Krispy Kreme at the next exit. The first guy looks at the traffic and says... "There's no way I'm cutting through this traffic... Forget that donut!"... The second guy doesn't care! He just turns his turn signal on, starts honking and takes the risk to cut through traffic and get to that exit! Even though they both said they loved donuts, the proof came from their actions.

The proofs in the puddin with Christians too... Christians don't do good works to brown nose God... It's just the natural result of what happens when you really start loving God... you will naturally just start making better decistions about what is right... It doens't work that way 100% of the time... it is a growing process for Christians... Likewise, there are many people you really don't love God... but they might love the idea of it... and think they are doing what's right... or they might just be trying to impress other people... so they actually do the works to fill a void in their lives... Could be the same motive that some athiests do it... I don't know. But nonetheless, they do cloud the view of true christianity for those who are on the outside looking in.

I believe in God and I try to do good deeds not only because God asked that we do good, but because it makes me feel good to be able to make a positive difference in someones life or in my little section of the world. You have been hanging around some strange people to get that idea about Believers.

·When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced.
Live your life so that when you die,
the world cries and you rejoice.
Cherokee Expression

I shall pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show any human being, let me do it now. Let me not deter or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

Well, it doesnt really matter whether one believes in God or not in doing good deeds, you can actually do good while not believing in God is also considered as a God deed, since it is written in the bible that when you love your neighbor you are actually loving God and I also believe that getting into heaven is not only achieved by believing in God bt moreso on what you do to others.

Where did you get the idea that all believers in God don't do good deeds to try to better the world? Sure, believers would like to get into heaven, but that doesn't mean they don't care about life on this earth--for their children, grandchildren, and beyond.

Yeah, that's about right. I feel that a good deed is a reward in and of itself. I do not fear punishment for failing to do good nor do I seek a reward as a result of doing good.

I have seen that many religious people who do good to appease their god often have a hard heart and despise the people they help. I used to volunteer with my dad at a religious charity and had to leave after a few days. The other volunteers (one of them, a very religious lady who bragged about all her daily devotions) often referred to the people coming in for help as "scum." Another lady told me not to look them in the eyes because they might rape me if I did--everyone knows they're godless and have no morals, after all, that's why they're poor. Yet another mentioned to me that only black people come in because that's the way they are--always looking for a handout rather than doing hard work. (I DO NOT agree with any of these things and nearly upchucked my lunch upon hearing them.)

On the flip side, I have seen non-religious people reach into their own pockets to take a homeless person out to eat, to buy a child they don't know some shoes and to give a stranded single mother bus tickets to get home to her children. It's always assumed that these helpful people are Christian, but they say they just smile inwardly and accept the thanks.

This is not to say that ALL Christians and religious types are brown-nosers for god. There may well be some out there who genuinely care and do it for the good of the people they help. And there may well be non-religious people who only help out to look good and get another type of brownie points. I'm only going on what I have seen. And what I have seen is that the best good is done by people who don't feel an obligation to do so.

It doesn´t sound right you saying that we do these good deeds to get into heaven. This is a big misconception. We go to heaven by our faith in Jesus and not by deeds, by the grace of God, not because we are "good".
We do these good deeds indeed (ha!) because we love all human beings, because we love God and because God is LOVE!

Well, Jesus supposedly said in Matthew 25:40 & James 1:27 "Whosoever does it to the LEAST of these My brethren... he does it to Me."

So, according to this thinking, whether someone does a good deed for the community, or whether they do it for god, or whoever....either way, god's happy about it.

Of course, some people think he said, Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother. A man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.

Sounds like a real fun place huh?
