Start by interviewing your family and writing your own family tree . It doesn't have to be pretty right now your goal is research.
Interview the oldest members of your family. I wish I had asked more questions and videoed them. Ask if you can borrow photographs to scan. Or go to office store and ask them to color copy them onto photo paper (even black and white photos)
Ask about first names /last names that were used or might have been changed. Where did people come from and live ( all clues in searching.)
If your relatives came in through Ellis Island try www.ellisisland records.org (It is Free) This is where name spelling variations and dates will help you to narrow down.
The library has the census going backs to the early 1900's on microfilm. Knowing the state county and addresses is important here. That is how to start you will find your own way. Without knowing more details of you family it is hard to direct you. Stick with it it sometimes gets frustrating but it is worth it. The best part putting the information I found on a DVD for my relatives and sharing it
