If I homeschool my son, is it possible (or legal) to take in other kids to homeschool as well? I really like teaching kids and am looking forward to teaching my son but I have talked with a few other parents and they are interested in having me teach their kids as well. If you personally homeschool your child--would you consider having someone else do it?

I am homeschooled, and I am in a homeschool co-op. I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're talking about, but some of the parents have things that they like or are capable of teaching, and they charge a small fee to take one class a week. For example, I take a Chemistry and an Algebra class through this group. Another thing that my mom does, and that a lot of other people do is "Cottage Schooling," where you offer classes in your home. Sometimes you would teach the class, and sometimes you would just host a class taught by someone else, depending on what you want to do. We have hosted art classes, music appreciation classes and several others in our home. I would advise you to discover what the policy is in your state, and if you are involved in a homeschool group find out what kind of opportunites they offer.

I am not sure about the legality of it, and I am sure it would vary from state to state. As for my personal prefereces, I would consider a co-op situation where on certain days of the week I trade off subjects with another parent, but I would not turn my child over to another person entirely unless it was my mom or mother in law, they are both teachers and I trust them. I would not trust anyone to be unsupervised with my child regularly, there are crazy people out there. Also a lot of homeschoolers have more than one child, and I am not sure one person can effectively teach a group of children of varying ages without having something give. So, I would not utilize this service. Also as a homeschooling parent I would not offer it because part of the joy of homeschooling is the flexibility of it. Being able to take a day off in the middle of the week for errands or because someone is sick, going on vacation in October, working on somethings after Dad gets home because he is better at some things, or deciding to take a park day to learn science outside. But if it works for you and you find it to be legal in your area, I wish you the best of luck.

It depends on the state you live in.........although, I know that foster children can't be homeschooled. I live in Missouri and you have to do a very high percentage of your own child's schooling. You can belong to a co-op like I teach Spanish to all the kids and someone else teaches art. It is illegal to charge to homeschool other kids........except for charging for supplies.
Here are some links to look at laws.......... if you can tell us your state, I have links for all of the state laws for an online group and I could share them with you.

there is a place where you click on your state to get the laws.

There are some states where the laws are very very strict, so I would definitely check them out.

Well, many people who homeschool do so, so that they can supervise their children and so that their children can progress at their own pace. If you were to school all of these children, how would they go at their own pace? If I had children, I would probably want to do it myself, just so that I knew what they were learning. But there are probably a lot of people who would consider it.

I know people who do that or have done that. It really depends on where you live, though. You'll have to find out if you can legally do it first. You can't in some places.

Where I live, that's not legal. It would have to be paid tutoring, and not homeschooling.

Well yeah as long as they were responsible and lived close by. Just make sure that you really want to though because it is a serious time commitment.
