Staph can be contagious, so as mentioned, it is best to keep your dog separated from any other pets just to be safe. I would also recommend wearing gloves of some sort and washing your hands after you handle your dog. The antibiotics and antibacterial shampoos mentioned are also good ideas. I would not be any less trustful of vets. Unfortunately staph is a very common bacteria and while your dog got it while in the vet clinic, it was on your dogs skin long before that. Just like in human cases of staph infections, it is a relatively common risk of surgery, hospital stays, and infection. You did not say what your dog was in the vet for, however if it was for surgery, recovery or treatment, his immune system was down, leaving room for the staph infection. It is also a common side effect of allergic reactions. It is unfortunate that it happened to your dog, but please don't let this experience keep you away for your dogs routine injections and basic medical care.

Staph infection are very bad. They are very contagious to other dogs and to people. If the infected area comes into contact with an open sore or wound the results could be fatal. To the extreme it could cause a MRSA infection(flesh eating bacteria). MRSA infections are resistant to most antibiotics.Trust a vet. An infection is not always preventable. Yes the vet might have made a mistake but there is a good possibility that the animal got the infection at home too. No vet would release an animal with a serious infection. At least they shouldn't. Email me if you need more info.

MRSA infections are the worst case scenario of a Staph Infection outside of death. Look it up.

Actually, your dog probably did get the staph infection from the vets. It is a major problem at hospitals for people as well. If the dog is on an antibiotic it should clear up. I would give it three days and if it doesn't improve, go to a different vet. There is no home remedy for staph and if it gets out of control your dog could die. Sometimes it takes a couple different antibiotics to find the one that will knock it out. Good Luck.

Home cures wont work. You'll need to dress the wounds regularly and clean them, continue with the antibiotics. Staph is contagious to anyone animal or human with an open entry point, Ie wound of their own. so if you are dressing the dogs wounds make sure you wash your hands before and after and wear a pair of gloves, otherwise you could find yourself with an infection also. What happened for your dog to get the cuts?

Keep his wounds clean and covered, keep up with the antibiotics until they are all gone. Its unfortunate this happened and its not entirely your vets fault, animals and people are always at risk of picking up infections from hospitals & Vets, its where the sick go to get better.
Staph is transferrable to other pets and humans, if any of your other dogs have open wounds keep them away from each other. Any humans who are ill should stay away from him also.
Always use rubber gloves when treating the wounds, depending on the severity of the wounds use bentidine, peroxide, or neosporin. Most importantly keep wounds cover, and keep your other dogs away from the wounds as dogs tend to lick wounds.
Staph is a hard infection to fight, stay on top of it , and keep those wounds clean & covered.
Good luck and speedy recovery to your dog.

The vet didnt give him staph per say. The anti boitics will kill staph but if you are worried go get some bacterial shampoo for dogs and bath him every other day. Staph is somewhat contagious yes. And for your dog's health I would isolate him to rest.

My 3yr old Bernese Mountain dog got a staph infection from my sisters dog, cephalexin for 28 days and now giving him 1-Omega 3, 1-fish oil and a big scoop of Coconut Oil 2x a day and it's working. The itching has stopped, the sores are gone, the shedding is decreasing and his hair is finally coming back after 3wks. This works for us, it takes time.

It is a skin infection that is very common in allergy dogs. You arent going to get it and it isnt a flesh eating bacteria for crying out loud. If you are this concerned about it- you need to call your vet and ask him/her these questions. There isnt any home remedy on the planet that will get rid of it. AB's are what your dog needs and please call your vet in the am to get this straightened around. Tell him/here everything that you are worried about! If you dont like the service from your vet- then I would get a second opinion.

unless your dog has been walking in starile conditions he can get an infection from anything in a deep cut. It isn't the vet's fault. It would be the owners fault for not taking care of the dog promptly by cleaning it and if it was that deep getting the dog vet care to get it cleaned and closed properly.
