IF he has hobbies - Try doing it with him. As a father I ask my daught out to lunch - dinner just to talk. We have done many things together. Watch TV. GO to movies, go fishing, take a walk. Go to sporting event, Go to the zoo. Stuff like that.

Walk around your neighborhood with him. Talk, A LOT. When he asks you what you did today, don't just grunt or say "nothing". Tell him everything good and bad! Give him a hug. Do things together. Read the same book and then have a discussion. Ask him to tell you a story, then tell him a story. Have a laugh your head off party(I'm thinking... jokes!). And most of all, send off good vibes to him, so he doesn't feel bad! Have an "interview'' together. And don't forget your mom, too! :)

I wanted to get close to my dad too so I started to invite him to go do things with me that I know he would like too like going to the park and playing with my dog, or going to the library with me. Then I asked him if next he was going to go run an errand or do something I could go along with him on if he would take me. Sure enough my dad took me to do things that he liked doing too. Always fun haha.

Cook with him. Go to a fair, a park, a picnic. Movies and anything you have to pay attention to are out. You can't talk at those venues. How about a small road trip? Good luck

It really depends on your age and his age. But i would suggest doing something that he likes to do with him, Like help him build something in his shed, Play a sport etc. This will put him in a comfortable space and let him know that your interested in what he does, in this comfrtable space he will be more inclined to just chat to you and talk to you about himself and his life. fishing is a good example, as its wuiet and its just you two with noi interuptions and again you can just chat.

Louise - We had a really fun one during the summer...We had a picnic with them, had a bubble gum blowing contest, and then played water volleyball...That is where you have water balloons for the "ball" and each couple has a towel. They hold the towel between them and when a balloon is launched over the net, they have to catch it in the towel and launch it back over. It was so fun...and of course it ended in one of the biggest water fights I have ever seen! We had father's that I didn't have a clue were so vicious and merciless! I was pretty save as I was wielding the camera for memory making photos....Until they held my arms, stripped me of my camera and dowsed me with a 5 gal bucket! We had some unforgettable moments and a lot on camera...then we had a scrapbook night and made pages with our pictures...that was a lot of fun and everyone laughed and joked and shared stories as they remembered how much fun they had! We were able to have it at one of the leaders backyards....One word of advice...bring a lot of extra towels and some garbage bags...(for everyone to put on their car seats to drive home!) This year, we are planning on having a Hawaiian Luau...complete with Dad's learning the Hula, and doing the stick game....
Patty in NJ - 'Jell-O Snarfing' -- hands behind back, equal amounts of Jell-O on each plate, face to plate, and snarf! Person finished first wins.
'Guess Who? '-- we asked the dads ahead of time to tell us one crazy thing they had done when they were younger. We put them on slips of paper and read them one by one, having the girls vote on who they thought it was. One of the dads had held his little sister by the ankle over the toilet when he was mad at her. He's a really serious, nice brother - you'd never think! The girls loved learning about the dads.
'Tapioca Splash' -- everyone's favorite. The fathers lay on their backs, with an ice cream cone in their mouth (opening facing up). The girls stood on a chair over their respective father, with a bowl of tapioca pudding and a spoon. The race was to see who could fill the cone first. Then they switched (father on chair, daughter on floor) They had lousy aim, and it was hysterical.
'Shave a balloon' -- put shaving cream on a blown up balloon. Race to shave it first.
'Food Relay' -- have identical items in two different paper bags. Put one bag each on a chair at the opposite side of the room. Two teams -- One person at a time races to the bag, pulls something out, eats it completely (opens their mouth to prove it), then runs back so the next person can go. We had: a big dill pickle, a juice box, 4 saltine crackers, a banana, a balloon (blow it up and tie it), a piece of bubble gum (chew and blow a bubble), a fruit roll-up, etc.
Last year we did a very fancy Daddy/Daughter date. We did a fancy restaurant, with maitre'd and waiters (the YM). The YW leaders prepared all the food (there's only two of us, so I wouldn't do it again!), and we had very fancy decorations. The tables were all laid with china, brandy snifters filled with water and floating candles with silk flower rings around them as centerpieces, lace hung in the corner with white Christmas lights behind, etc. After dinner, we had a couple teach them to waltz with their dads, and we took individual pictures of the girls with their dads. My counselor had a lace parasol, which the girls held over their shoulder in the picture, and the dads put on a top hat which we borrowed from one of the H.S. props dept. It was a great night, but a HUGE amount of work.
Sue Brown, in Sunny, Cool, London, Ontario, Canada - We are having the girls make individual posters - which is an idea from my book again - then a larger version of same poster with candy bars stuck to it and sayings relating to brand of candy bar. Each girl is going to stick a candy bar to the large poster with a saying that incorporates the candy name.... and address it to the father or uncle, Hometeacher - whoever the YW invites along. On their own personal poster they will write a message thanking the priesthood holder for all that he does, or for a specific thing that he has done. We have invited the Bishop and all the girls are going to do a poster for him also. Submitted by
Shauna is sunny Ivins - We did a daddy daughter date around western theme. We had sloppy joes etc. We took pictures of the girls and their dads and had them developed 5x7 size. The girls at an activity made padded frames for them and gave them to their dad's for Fathers Day. They loved it. We got double prints so the girls could have one also to put in their scrap books.
J Walker jwalker@cedarcity.net - Last year we played "Wheelbarrow Baseball" as a Father/Daughter party. The girls batted and then hopped into a wheelbarrow to be pushed around the bases by their dads. Several times, a few dads took off running, completely forgetting their daughters! Everyone had a great time anyway! After the game we had homemade ice cream.
Kris in Oregon sfarrar2@juno.com - I'm sure you already thought of this, but what about a piñata? You could even have the girls make it with paper mache' at an activity prior to the daddy daughter date. I know that there is some sort of cut paper craft used with colorful paper that could be used for decorations (I guess that would take some research.) If you made invitations as well, you could get several activities out of it. We recently did a "Mission Impossible" daddy daughter date where everyone came as secret agents, it was a blast!! Enjoy, it's fun to watch the girls "bond" with their dad's.
