Giving your dog chocolate is not a good idea, although if your dog eats chocolate by accident she will probably not die but will get sick. Chocolate has two main "bad" ingredients caffeine and theobromine. The darker the chocolate the more "poisonous" the chocolate. In addition to a high fat content, chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, two different types of stimulants that affect the central nervous system and the heart muscle, as well as increasing the frequency of urination. If your 50-pound dog gets his paws on a single chocolate-chip cookie, it probably won’t cause him serious problems. However, if he gobbles up more – a pan of brownies, say – he may develop vomiting or diarrhea.
The amount of chocolate that it takes to poison your pet depends on the type of chocolate he’s eaten and his weight. White chocolate has the least amount of stimulants and baking chocolate or cocoa beans have the highest. Here is a list of the most common sources of chocolate and the amount that leads to toxicity:
• Milk Chocolate. Mild signs of toxicity can occur when 0.7 ounces per pound of body weight is ingested. Severe signs occur when 2 ounces per pound of body weight is ingested. This means that a little less than one pound of milk chocolate can be toxic to the nervous system of a 20-pound dog. A 10-pound cat would need to ingest 1/2 pound.

Well, if you are giving your dog chocolate on purpose, stop. That is not good for them and if they eat too much, your dog will become very sick, and possibly die. Although, if your dog is sniffing scraps and eats a little bit of chocolate on accident, that is fine and it won't affect the dog.

It is NOT OKAY to give your dog chocolate. Milk chocolate is not necessarily dangerous to the dog however DARK chocolate can KILL in the right amounts. I would not recommend giving any dog chocolate as each animal reacts differently. I had a greyhound eat a whole bag of M&M's while I was at work. He didn't get sick, but he had horrible diarehha for days after. Another dog might react differently to it. I would speak to your vet to get a complete answer, however in the meanwhile DO NOT give you dog chocolate. If you feel you need to treat your dog to chocolate, please go to your local pet store and purchase dog safe chocolate flavored treats. I hope this helps you.

Dark chocolate has more cocoa in it and could be dangerous depending on the size of your dog. My 30 lb. dog ate a Pound of Hershey's nuggets (got it out of a drawer in my room while i was at work) and he didn't even get sick, but I love my dogs and don't want to take a chance. There are other treats for them that they like too. Don't give them grapes or onions either.

Eating chocolate will definitely mess up your dog's intestines and could lead to death depending on the amount of chocolate ingested. Staying away from all table food is the best thing for the health of your dog and all pets.

The dog will get sick, how sick depends on what kind of chocolate and how much she ate. It ranges from diarrhea to coma and death. Theobromine is what actually causes the problems, and bakers chocolate has the highest concentration.

I have heard that it is very bad for a dog to eat chocolate and can make them very sick. One day my Yorkie who I said earlier was barely 4 lbs found a box of Valentine's chocolates in my daughter's room and ate the whole box and not a thing happened to her...she didn't even vomit. She must have had a stomach of steal...LOL

They don't handle bromoxanthines well, so I wouldn't push it, especially with dark chocolate, but they seem to tolerate small amounts pretty well. It's about the equivalent to giving a small child free access to all the espresso he can drink.
