Macaroni can take 5 -8 min, it all depends, refer to the box for approximate time.
It should look somewhat puffy and float, take one out and try it when in doubt. As for the the cheese, we just put in a tablespoon or so of Cheese whiz and stir it in until it's melted.

You need to check the package and see how many minutes it takes. Then, just to be sure, take one noodle out when the time is up, let it cool a few seconds, and then taste it. It should be soft.
if you don't use cheese, a nice topping is a drizzle of extra vergin olive oil with parmesan sprinkled on it.

Ask his mother ... if she overcooked it then it is probably the way he is used to it. Most people prefer it cooked short of being starchy. Next time try stirring it as you cook it (I boil the water before adding, but I don't like it overcooked). Then go by the package directions exactly. I think it takes 6-8 minutes.

Maybe he doesn't like al dente. Maybe you didn't read the instructions on the box.
Plus, you can't just eat plain noodles.. You should have at least buttered them, thrown some salt and pepper and garlic on it or something.

as with any pasta; take it out of the water as it cooks ... bite it in half...you can see if it's not cooked all the way thru. Don't overcook.
