this includes everything from religion to drug use. I teach my children to think for themselves and to keep in mind that most often a "study" or "report" is done to serve an agenda, and is NOT always in their best interests. This includes things their teachers may say, things that I may say, things that the pastor at their church may say. My children know (are being taught) that in order to make an informed decision, that you need to gather information...not take everything that may be written in a book or spoken by an adult at face value.

Opinions?

Blind faith in anything will create more brainless sheep in the vast herd of people in this world already.
Skepticism is a healthy thing and I try like hell to teach that to my 3 kids.

I think kids today are not respectable today as was 30 years ago. It is good to have questions and to stand up for your values but some parents will take it WAY overboard. If a child Questions everything in the classroom he can become disruptive and defiant. They can also be ridiculed or mislabeled as troublemakers(such as refusing to do a report because there is an "agenda"). My kids and I have debates(I love a good debate) about issues but not when it comes time for me to direct them in the way he/she should go. They better take it as the law. As far as religion goes, I wont go there because it is a touchy subject among people here on this board. There is one book I wont question. That is the Bible. That is my humble opinion.

It's good. The Bible says, " Come let us reason together". But you need a solid foundation to build on and compare things to or they will end up confused and lost. As the song says, " If you don't stand for something you''ll fall for anything". But remember it's not what you tell them but what you show them that they will learn to do. They will follow the example of those that they are around. The Bible says that we become like the people we hang around with. "Bring up a child in they way he should go and he will not depart from it". Teach your children to make the Bible their solid foundation and they will be able to overcome the traps of the world. It's a great feeling when people look up to your children for help and advice.

Sounds perfectly reasonable.

Obviously, they will always reach opposition if an opinion they come to is different from the typical norm, and they should be prepared for that. There is nothing wrong with being skeptical, but they need to know that they should still be respectful of others' viewpoints.

When it comes to religion, it really does depend on whatever your viewpoints are. Religion is something that is highly based on faith, and teaching your children to not trust in ANYTHING without proof, could definitely cause a speedbump in their spiritual growth.

In conclusion, I think that it would be best to reach a nice compromise between trust and skepticism. Being trusting isn't a disadvantage. :)

Did you teach them the proper skills and manners that should be used when questioning someone? Do they know how to do their own research on a topic to find the facts? I am not sure what you mean about religion...the pastor at their church..are you sending them to a church that you do not attend? And drug use...do you condone it?
Are they finding the facts or just questioning authority figures? Anyone can argue a topic without logic...but it just shows the other person that they have no common sense.

I agree, I grew up in church, but if I ever had a question I was taught to ask my parents, and other teachers for different views. I have always been taught not to have "blind faith" not just from a religious standpoint, but from a life standpoint too. I question my teachers at school, I question the leaders in the clubs I am in, I never do any thing with out understanding it completely. to understand things completely you must ask questions. this is how I will raise my kids too. it is a very good quality.

I teach my children the same way...do not always believe what you hear. That especially goes for religion. They need to believe in and have faith in what they want to believe in, not because someone told them they should believe. With drugs I can tell my kids not to use drugs till I am blue in the face and it doesn't mean that they are not going to do them. I can tell them all about all the horror stories of when I used drugs and they will still go out and try it on their own just cause they don't have the experience that I had. I think they have to think on their own.

I teach my kids to also question everything and to gather all the information before making a decision. I of course agree with you.

Yes and no. When children are very young, it is important for them to have a source to look to that they can trust thoroughly. That should probably be you. It's fine to question, but don't tell them to question you. If you're wise enough to think for yourself and teach your children to think for themselves, then hopefully you can be relied on for the right choices when your children aren't mature enough to make the decisions for themselves.

It's good. As a kid, you can't just be told, "don't do drugs". It's rare this will work, no matter how much it is shoved down your throat. One needs to discover for themselves the dangers and risks, and be able to say, "I do not want to do drugs" rather than saying "My parents say do not do drugs".
