Well, have you considered a mixed breed dog? Perhaps go to the local SPCA or animal shelter and look. Talk to the individuals working and get and idea of the dogs they have, perhaps explain to them what you want and so on. Many times they will be able to assist you in making an informed decision on temperment and such.

Hi, If your kids are less than 2 years old, a pup would be given a hard time by them, as they regard it as a toy. Kids need to be aware that they cannot at any time, handle animals roughly. Any sort of terrier or cattledog is a bad idea, as they are bred to bite and sometimes get too excited and rough. Cocker spaniels are nice natured and good little guard dogs. Dalmations will bark at strangers and have lots of energy and nice natures. Any large dog will need regulare exercise and obedience training to become a useful and controllable pet. Whippets have gorgeous natures, are clean and gentle. Not protective, though. Any dog will get along with your cat if never encouraged to chase it. They will either ignore each other forever or slowly become friends. Dont force it though. Kelpies are good, but need excercise. Border collies are far too active for just pets and often develop behavioural problems when not exercised heaps, trained and included in everything. Poodles are smart, dont drop hair and will bark. Coat needs maintenance, though.
Animal shelters help save a life, spend some time playing with it first, though. Good luck, Tanya

Honestly- you should pcik the dog that you want- assuming you are the mom- the mom should pick which dog to get- as she will be the one to take care of it . Call your vet and tell them what you are looking for- they should be able to assist you with making this choice.
Be carefull when looking at those cute little terriers- I love them dearly but you have to put in a lot of training constantly, every day- they are a lot of work. Do your research on a breed to make sure thatis what you want- don't go with what is cute as a puppy. Stay away from the pet store- those are all from puppy mills no matter what anyone tells you! It all depends on what you are looking for and if mom doesnt want a dog- DONT GET A DOG.
Also check out the AKC website- there is a list of breeds and a quiz there as well.
www.petfinder.com great site to look at dogs- great site to rescue one! Most all of these dogs have been fixed, been in a rescue and these people know how the dog acts around children and could help you out as well.
A few breeds that are great family dogs IMO are:
King Charles Cavalier Spaniels
Pugs
Golden Retriever
Heinz 57

A larger dog would be better than a small lap dog. Larger dogs have less trouble dealing with children and the attention spent on them. A rottweiler is a good fit. They love kids, they are playful and they are the most loyal dog. Plus they give you the protection you want.

Don't get a lab if you have small kids, they'll be knocked to the floor so many times and have all sorts of bruises. Also, don't get a dog if it is just for the kids. As much as they promise, kids should never be held responsible for the care of a dog. A german shepherd mix might be good for your family, it will be sturdy enough to hold up to three boys and its looks alone might protect you and your house.

Maybe a golden retriever. I know my neighbor has a collie and she got along with the kids. We used to have a dog but it was a mean one so we had to get rid of it. You could always get a lab or something similar that will be gentle on your kids and not kill the cat.

to find a good breed you will need to give more info for ex.size, group, mix or pure but off the info you gave maybe a clumber spaniel, bloodhound you could also take a quiz that tells you what breed you would be if you were a dog at www.quizmeme.com

i agree. I think you should get a mutt. They have all the advantages of all the dogs they are mixed with, and less disadvantages. And go to the shelter. It's better to save a life. And they're mostly sweeter.
