Boredom and to get your attention. This dog is wanting more time with you and playtime with you. Also, this dog is left alone for far too long, gets bored and combines boredom with doing something that will get your attention. Spend a whole lot more time with the dog, take the dog for long walks and get it plenty of exercise. When leaving for a long period of time, pen it in a cage made for his size or restrict it to the kitchen where you can prevent further damage.

Anxiety and/or Boredom

you should correct him by showing him what he did wrong, firmly grab him by the top of his muzzle and push down telling him "no Bad boy No chew".
Leave him with toys that will preoccupy his alone time, Kongs filled with treats and other puzzle toys.
Make sure he has his own comfy spot, IE, bed, crate, room of his own , etc.
If need be use crate training to minimize the damage when you are not home.
When you are home and you see this destructive display, throw a choke chain at him, not hard, just enough to startle him, he will associate this with doing something wrong and eventually stop this bad behavior.
Good Luck I hope this info helps.

Two possiblilites:

1) your dog is bored. And he is relieving the bordom by inventing a great new game - shred the carpet. Make sure your dog has plenty of chew toys and gets LOT of exercise. If you have a fenced yard, make sure you let your dog spend at least several hours a day outside.

2) your dog is mad at you. My boxer chews up the azalea bushes in front of my porch whenever he gets upset or thinks we're not paying enough attention to him. He literaly chews them down to twigs. Then we pay extra attention to him, and he's fine and doesn't even look at the azalea bushes...until the next time he gets mad. LOL

Again, just make sure you're giving your dog plenty of attention and exercise.

It sounds as if your hound is bored. Many times dogs will become destructive if they are bored, feel as if they are lacking interaction or want attention. If this occuring when you leave, you may want to consider leaving a radio on softly to make your pooch feel as if they really arent alone.

Perhaps some toys and quality time may be in order also.

Shes bored and possibly feeling neglected.. my dog loudly licks her arm when she thinks shes not getting enough attention from me. If its happening when your Not home you need to possible temp crate her until she learns her lesson. She needs to be properly trained and shown what she did was wrong. A friend of mine got a dog that did this when he got new carpet after about 3 months of telling her NO and putting her in a crate when she did it, she learned it was wrong and stopped! That's only one technique, you can try whatever works for you but remember, dogs dont know better unless you teach them!

Some dogs just like to tear stuff up. Some like to dig. Tearing up carpet is bad, though. Discipline when he does it, and reward it when it doesn't.

bored dogs (pets) can be very destructive - I had the same experience. When you cannot keep your eyes on them, better to leave them outside the house (in the kennel?) or leashed.
