Sun Tzu wrote "The Art of Warfare", he was not a general. Just wanted to clarify that due to a certain post.

My bad about Sun Tzu, I have only heard about his book on warfare, thinking it was like Vegetius who was a war philosapher.

Just the opinion -- but I think that some of these people wouldn't want to be on the same page as some of the others.

Robert E. Lee
Blackjack Pershing
Stonewall Jackson
Douglas MacArthur
William Tecumseh Sherman
George S. Patton
Erwin Rommel
John Abizaid
Chesty Puller
Napoleon Bonaparte

Of course it is hard to limit to only 10... with more time I'd probably ad to and delete from this list.

That is more of an opinion question. My top 10 US generals of all time (Not in any order) are:

Stonewall Jackson
Douglas MacArthur
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Omar Bradley
John J. Pershing
William T. Sherman
George Washington
George Patton
Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager
Robert E. Lee

For a top 10 generals of the world I would have to say:

Alexander the Great
Genghis Khan
Hannibal
George S. Patton
Erwin Rommel
Charlemagne
Scipio Africanus (Publius Cornelius Scipio)
Sun Tzu
Napolean Boneparte
Atilla the Hun

Also, Sun Tzu was a general. See this excert:

Skilled and experienced in warfare matters during a time of unprecedented political and military turmoil, Sun Tzu validates his treatise. When asked by King Ho-lu whether the book's principles can be applied to anyone, Sun Tzu replies, "Yes." As proof of his competency and to confirm the principles' effectiveness, he successfully transforms 180 court women into trained soldiers in one session.

With Sun Tzu as general, King Ho-lu captured the capital city of Ying to defeat the powerful Ch'u state in 506 BC. He then headed north and subdued the states of Ch'i and Chin. Not surprisingly, Sun Tzu's name quickly spread throughout the land and among the feudal lords.

Alexander the Great
Hannibal
Saladin
Helmuth Von Moltke
Napoleon Bonaparte
Arthur Wellesley, First Duke Of Wellington
Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson
William Tecumseh Sherman
Erich Von Mannstein
Alexander Patch

Some of these are argumentative, but they're still deserving.

Names like Patton, Eisenhower, Zhukov, Montgomery, Rommel, etc should be on the 10 Most Overated, Overhyped, Overinflated by the Popular Media List.
