We added a new dog to the family two days ago - could that be the source of the problem?

EDIT: Yes, the new dog had all of his shots. He's perfectly healthy, but definitely getting more of the attention than the sick dog.

MORE DETAILS: I threw down some popcorn to see if he'd eat it, and he did eat the popcorn. He's just not interested in his treats or food.

Both dogs are up-to-date on vaccinations, etc.

YET MORE DETAILS:

The vomit was a sort of foamy liquid.

Where did you get the new dog you just got?? Was it taken to the vet to check it out and make sure it is healthy? Is it acting ok?

Yes, stress of having a new dog in home might put a dog off his eating. Did he vomit food up or just liquid stuff? Are they sharing the same food/water bowls? Any other changes in the original dog like laying around more, loose stools, not drinking???

Yes, it is a weekend and vets closed. I assume you have a vet? If so, try the after hours emergency # and consult. Seperate the dogs and food/water just in case. Keep close eye on both for signs of illness. Look for nasty poops. If your original dog has been vetted and up to date there is not as much risk of catching something from new dog. If none of that has been done then you need to take both in Monday for sure.

The foamy liquid that your dog threw up is probably bile. It means your dog has an empty tummy, but you already knew that :-)

I used to have a similar problem when my dog ws still pup because there were days when she would wouldn't eat when she was supposed to would throw up a foamy kind saliva. Sometimes it was clear and sometimes it looked kind of yellow.

I suspect that your dog is not eating to get more attention because of the new dog in the house. When he gets hungry enough, he will eat. A dog will not starve to death and will eat when he gets hungry enough, unlike a cat.

Unfortunately, you may have to put up with this behavior for while until the older dog realizes that the new dog isn't going anywhere and is going to be a ,member of the family now, too.

Try to show him some extra attention and give him a few more days to adjust. If he's still behaving in this manner , I would definitely contact your vet, but I don't think there's any need to rush him to an emergency clinic.

Good luck.

It certainly could be. He may be upset with the new addition. But sometimes my dogs do the exact same thing for no apparent reason. Just like we get upset tummies sometimes. Just keep an eye on him and if he is still refusing to eat and throwing up in a day or 2, take him in. But make sure that he has access to water so he doesn't become dehydrated.

MORE DETAILS: That is stomach acid he is regurgitating. I'm sure he will be fine in a day or 2.

Could be upset. Try making him rice with chicken, that is what the vet I worked for used to recommend. If he does not eat that you may have a concern. Not eating for a dog is usually not a good sign, but with a stressful situation, that could very well be the cause. If he does not eat in a day or two I would definitely take him to the vet.

He/she is upset. Something in your dogs environment is not sitting well with it.The new dog is the problem. It will take some time but it should start acting normal in a few days.Your dog ate the popcorn because you gave it to him and he acknowledged it as a sign of affection/attention.

My dog goes on for days without eating, and then eats like there's no tomorrow. Often, when a dog's environment is changed, they have stomach problems. let him/ her eat some grass, that will usually help. If it gets bad, call a vet. They'll know what to do.

Was the vomit yellow mustard-colored? Dogs will often vomit yellow bile if they are late for or miss a normal meal time. If it's this kind of vomit, it is typically not anything to worry about. (If not, look further)

It's also certainly possible that your dog is off-balance or stressed by the new dog.

it very well could be. i hope that dog had all of its shots a was properly vaccinated other wise you could have killed your dog by bringing diseases in the house. I'd say if your dog isn't better by tomorrow morning Get to a vet and get both dogs thoroughly examined!

Yes, that could be it. Just make sure the dog knows that it's still loved too, and don't neglect him in favor of the new dog.

It could also be worms or canine leukemia. Take him to a vet!

sometimes a change can stress out an animal, also dogs can get little stomach bugs (flu-like) just like humans. keep and eye on him and if he doesn't improve give the vet a call just to be safe
