For instance, if you are a woman with a lower tone or a man with a higher tone, is it possible to permanantly alter the pitch of your speaking voice by speaking in a higher/lower tone consistantly, or are you born with your (post-puberty) vocal pitch predetermined? I've always wondered this.

The natural position of your vocal chords usually determines the
pitch of your voice. However, through vocal training you most
definately can change it. When I was about l2 I had a voice
that sounded like minimouse...high, scratchy and cartoon-like.
One night, my father secretly recorded my voice at the dinner
table and played it back to me the next day, not saying a
word about what he'd done. I said, "Dad, whoever that is,
she sounds like a little mouse" and my father simply replied,
"That my dear is you." Well the next weekend I was off to
drama lessons and speech class and today I sound like
the well modulated people on the news. So yes, it is very
possible to alter your speaking voice permanently..........
singing voice also now that you mention it.

There are ways to subtly alter your pitch but they take conscious effort. Breathing and projecting from your abdomen and ensuring the tone comes from the front of your mouth will produce a rich, deep timbre in your voice. Talking from your throat produces a higher pitched tone. If you do anything enough it will become second nature, so if you take a second and choose which tone you use enough times eventually you will not even think before doing it.
