The DVD and VCR are separate machines both connected to the TV. Can I watch something on the DVD while recording a program using the VCR?

yes you can because the vcr is recording the things on the tv and the dvd player is playing the dvds on the av mode of your tv.

Sure, no problem, unless you are watching the DVD on composite video on channel 3 and have the DVD player before the VCR and are trying to record channel 3. I use componant video inputs, so there's no conflict.
