Princess Cruises offers an itinerary to Antarctica that departs from South America, however it's just one sailing per year, and this past year it was in January.

The next sailing will be onboard Star Princess departing Jan 10, 2008 from Buenos Aires. An inside cabin will cost you $2,445 USD plus tax.

There are a number of different companies that have Antarctica cruises and they vary enormously in quality and, hence, price. You will find them mostly in $US.

They leave from Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego which is at the southern-most tip of Argentina. In fact, it is the southern-most city in the world! It is a lovely little city and you can hang around there for a couple of days and do some hikes nearby, go to the Marine Museum and check out the shops. I did a half day trip to an island just off shore where there are thousands of penguins which was fun, but you will get to see them in Antarctica too. My advice is to spend as much time in Argentina as you can cos it is one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

Your best bet is to fly to either Santiago de Chile (then overland or fly to Buenos Aires, or fly straight to BA. There are 2 airports that aren't that far from the city and you should catch a radio cab from the airport. You pay before you catch it so you don't get ripped off - there is an official place to do this. Your airlines are Lan Chile (they use Airbus and are great with all the entertainment) or Aerolineas Argentinas which I have not personally tried but are not supposed to be as good. You will probabaly have a 2 hour stopover in NZ but you can't leave the airport.

With the cruises you need to keep in mind:
- Do they have day trips onto the glaciars? Zodiacs, kayaks, Scuba,
- How much do day trips cost?
- What will you see?
- What time of year do you see animals?
- How far in does the cruise go?

I have put some links for you to look at to help you make your decision.

Some other cruise lines to look at are:
- Clipper Cruise Lines-Adventurer
- Norwegian Coastal Voyages-Nordnorge
- Quark Expeditions-Professor Multanovski
- Polarquest-M/S Prof. Multanovski
- Abercrombie & Kent-Explorer II
- Hapag-Lloyd-MS Bremen
- Regent Seven Seas-Explorer II
- Lindblad Special Expeditions-Endeavour
- Discovery World Cruises-MV Discovery
- Norwegian Coastal Voyages-Nordkapp

Try to get a smaller ship as you will get in closer to see the scenery with the naked eye.

There was a story tody about a cruise to the Antarctic that had some problems, was run by "My Planet" I think. Although given the problems don't know if that's of any help... Peregrin Adventures and Intrepid Travel might be of help though.

I'm so sorry but that is impossible to do. Only scientists are allowed to Antarctica for scientific expirements.
