Start paying attention to your dog. I let my dog take naps with me. I hug it from time to time. I try to have snuggle time every day. I talk to him. Walks on a leash at first then try his loyalty when you feel confident... Sometimes I'll even ask him questions even though I know he won't answer. Also spend play time with him from time to time.
One day I accidentally left the gate open. When I went outside He was still there. I don't need a leash either, he just follows me around... I also went away for the weekend and my dog wouldn't eat. The lady that was taking care of him said he mopped around the entire time I was gone...

That sucks. It's hard to say without knowing more details (how much you are home with the dog, etc). Some general principles apply though. Give your dog plenty of exercise morning and night (long walk or jog). Get a GOOD collar so you're in control. Get him neutered (a male dog WILL leave when his hormones take over, if at all possible). Depending on your resources, there are other possibilities such as an invisible fence or running line. Don't punish the dog when you catch him - dog's won't realize what they're being punished for. They think you're punishing them for coming back. Praise the dog once you get them back. Find a website and teach the command "come". For now, reward the any successful response every time with a treat. Good luck - I wish you success!!

Why would your dad kill the dog? It's not the dog's fault he's not trained. Dogs aren't mindreaders.
Like Torbay said, try a leash. That's always stopped my dogs from getting anywhere.
Dogs need consistent training. Everyone in the house must be on the same page and be willing to put the time into training it. Consistency is key. Give immediate, positive praise when the dog does something you like.
If you really think your dad will kill this dog, please try and take it to a shelter or give it to someone you know. I cannot believe that someone would kill an animal simply because it's not trained, but nothing should surprise me on here anymore.

Even leave the dog in the house or when hes outside tie him up to something so hes able to run around but not out of the yard. If all else fails look into an invisible fence for the dog the one with just a tiny shock so he will learn to stay inside of the gate or yard. Good Luck getting your dog trained.

I would look into getting a Gentle Leader. You can purchase this at any pet store or your vet. I would also get into some beginner training classes for your dog asap. The Gentle Leader comes with a very good instructional DVD and everything you need to get started on the right path. Also Never ever punish your dog from running away- when he comes back- give him his favorite reward!

Understand that your dog isn't trying to be bad or contrary, this is just natural behavior for dogs. In the wild they have lots and lots of territory to cover. What you need to do is train your dog and take some preventative measures
Is this an outside dog or an inside dog? (I'm hoping an inside dog because it will be a little easier - not to mention that dogs do better health wise and psychologically when they're not left chained up outside all day).
If this is an inside dog, don't ever let the dog got out unattended Not even for a minute. Get a good sturdy leash and a properly fitted collar. It may take your dog a little while to get used to taking care of his business with you hovering around, but he can't run off if you're hanging onto him. If he tries to bolt out the door when you open it, it may be worthwhile to keep a leash on him inside too. (If he manages to get the leash out of your hands and takes off, just run up and step on the leash)
Is the dog fixed? Fixed animals are much less inclined to roam (getting him neutered actually does a great deal to help manage problem behaviors and decreases health problems down the road).
Dogs don't naturally stay in yards (they have no concept of the idea in fact.) If you live somewhere with property you can ask your dad if you can put down an invisible fence (this will require some training for your dog to get used to it) or put up some fencing to make a dog run (offer to help pay for it and do grunt work to get it in)
Now if the dog is an outside dog, you absolutely need to build him a run. Dogs left chained to a post suffer some very bad mental conditions and it can make them aggressive. You will still need to take him out for walks on a leash to keep him healthy.
Get some training classes for your dog. Not only will it teach your dog things, but it will teach you how to teach him. Again, offer to pay from your pocket. Look for one that is all positive reinforcement (check with your local Petsmart or vet's office).
Your dad is right to be concerned. A loose dog can leave you liable to all sorts of legal problems. If he's caught running loose then he can be taken to a shelter and killed right away. If he's caught running loose with a tag on you (or rather your dad because you're underage) can be fined a lot of money. If your dog is running loose and bites someone then you can be sued and criminal charges can be filed (and again your dog can be put down). This doesn't even count the ways your dog could get hurt if he runs away (coyotes, bad people, cars, even hawks).
Go to your local bookstore and get some books on training. Look online for ways to address this specific problem
I hope this helps (good luck)

Oh. I am so very sorry about your dads threat, so I do think that you should use whatever amount of money you have to find a trainer. Or you could build something so your dog cannot get out any way possible. If worst comes to worst, find a new home for your dog (its better than having him die)
sincerely,
a dog lover.

They have things called leashes for walking your dog and fences to keep them in. Ask your dad to put up a fence so your dog cannot run away.

6 weeks is pleanty of time. Most dogs just need to be disciplined. you do not need professional help because they cant do anything that you cant do yourself. all you do is use some of your free time and take your dog for walks, the dog must walk right by your side. this teaches him or her to be attached to you and you'll notice that he will not escape again. and be at your side always.

I had a dog like that once. I never could train her. Some dogs just don't want to be put in a cage. Talk to your dad, if you really love this dog you should be able to convince your dad not to kill your dog. if all else fails, find a friend to take your dog, it's better than putting it down.
