He won the title from nobody the first time, then won it from Ingo the second time. You can't win the title FROM somebody, if it is vacant.

Patterson won an eliminator over Archie Moore. The previous champ, Rocky Marciano, had vacated the title and retired undefeated.

He beat Archie Moore in 1956 for the vacant title vacated when Rocky Marciano retired. He won via 5th round knockout over Moore. He lost to Ingemar Johansson in 1959 and regained it from him the next year.

Patterson and Moore fought for the title vacated by Marciano when the Rock retired. After being knocked out in the first fight against Ingemar he won the title back by landing a picture perfect left hook that knocked Johansson out cold and had his left foot twitching.

besides moore and johansen, also beat jimmy ellis late in his career would have made him champion but they gave decision to ellis.
