I have heard of a parole lawyer that is suppose to be really good in Houston. She has taled to my friend and said she would take his case, but do you think it is worth it if she can try to get him out sooner?

A hired lawyer is more likely to vigorously work on your case than an appointed lawyer since there is money to be made in doing so. Remember that, no matter how good the lawyer, they will not "get you off" if you are guilty. A good defense lawyer will seek to ensure that the accused was afforded all the rights they should have been. Once this process is done, and if a case still exists, they will work to get the accused the best deal possible.

Be realistic too. Are you willing to spend $5000 to get a parole violation reduced? How much of a reduction are you talking about - a month, six months? How strong is the case against him? If it is a strong case, hiring a lawyer may be nothing more than throwing money at a problem that can't be fixed.

Before you hire a lawyer, do some research on them. Don't rely on their website or fliers since they will cite their most succesful cases to try to get you to hire them. They may have lost 100 cases for each case they won. You wouldn't spend your hard earned money to hire a doctor that saved 1 out of 100 would you? Of course they won't tell you that so you will have to do some research. Call the bar association. Research with the courts and make your decision only after you are well informed.
