I am taking this girl out for dinner on Valentine's day. I have a cpl of problems..I have only been in Chicago for three months, so I don't know much about which is a nice charming fine dining place to take a girl? (she doesn't know either, she lives in WI)
Other problem: I have never been on a date before..so I'm kinda nervous
Last problem: I don't like these hoity toity restaurants, where you have to all dress up and pay a fortune for bare minimum food. I don't think I would feel comfy in one of these fancy places. Any ideas on how to calm my nerves?

Some good suggestions, but Ambria and Trotter's are at the very top of the the hoity toity scale.

You do not note where you'd like to go (city or suburb, downtown or neighborhood) so I've limited this list to places that are not too upscale and not too expensive (although the are not cheap) and in the city.

1492 Tapas - Tapas are all the rage, but if you are not familiar, it might be a little uncomfortable. It's small portions and you eat and order as you go. Better with a group of 4 than 2, but it is really a fun relaxing way to go.
Other good Tapas places are Twist and Cafe Ba-Ba-Reba

RoSal's Italian Kitchen - Everyone loves Italian - nothing pretentious here, and the Little Italy location is nice.
Sapori Trattoria - a nice neighborhood Italian in Lincoln Park. Not too hard to get a reservation.
Rose Angelis in Lincoln Park is better, but it can be hard to get in.
Luna Caprese - this is over near Webster Place. Try a late afternoon movie and dinner afterward.
Extra Virgin - Italian an more. It's a cool location on Randolph in the restaurant district.

Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro - I have not tried this place yet. It's in west Lakeview, but it looks great inside and I've heard good things.

Grand Lux Cafe - eating here is a little like going to a Cheescake Factory, but you can't beat Michigan Avenue.

Platiyo - a great little Miexican place near Wrigely Field.

I recommend Joy Yee Noodle in China Town. It is not hoity toity. It has good food and good fruit drinks. You won't spend a fortune. If you want to later, you could do a horse carriage by Michigan Avenue. That would be romantic.

Being a girl I really dont enjoy going out to those big fancy dress up places. The place i love to go is "The Patio." The food there is so good. Anything I order makes my mouth water. The place is very big. They are known for their BBQ ribs and sauce. It is very good. Last time my BF and I went we spent about $25 total. But thats because we both ordered 2 sandwiches each and a pitcher of beer. The one I go to is 9100 S. Harlem Ave. Here is there website: www.patioribs.com
check it out. There are also other locations then what I mentioned. Good luck and have fun. Just be yourself. No girl wants a guy who's putting on a act. No need to be nervous.

while they aren't fine dining they do have a comfortable environment, good food and are not hoity toity
