This may sound CRAZY, but I'm betting a DOCTOR would know! Maybe you should ask one? Yeah, I know...that idea came out of left field!

Does it look like a vein has just become very enlarged, i.e., like a varicose vein, or does it look like a vein ruptured and you have blood pooling under the skin over a wide area of at least a centimeter or more? It sounds like you may have a rupture. It could also be a deep muscle bleed.
If so, elevate the leg as much as you can, and apply ice packs to the area where the bleeding is occuring, 10 minutes on, 20 minutes off, and do this for about an hour or two to try to stop the bleeding, or at least slow it down.
If you leg swells up significantly and the skin gets tight, and/or if you feel any numbness in the leg, do not wait to see the doctor - go to an emergency room immediately. Large bleeds can cause pressure in the leg that stops the circulation, and this can lead to tissue death and the need to amputate the leg. So do not delay if you feel any numbness.

Could it be a broken blood vessel? I don't know what it is for sure without seeing it. Going to the doctor sounds like a really good idea. I hope its not a blood clot but you usually can't see those I think. I'm not a doctor so I really can't tell you much about it.

Based on what you are telling us - GET TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM! Dude thats some serious symptoms and needs to be seen ASAP!
You dont need to suffer, Just be certain you tell them at the desk, that "blood is pooling in your leg and the pain is unbearable"
Dont delay - get off your butt and move mister! I am NOT joking!

it could be phlebitis which is a blood clot, is it hot? is there a red streak running from it, could it be blood poisining? Did you bang it? you can try ice, and if that does not work try heat.

Please go to the ER tonight, if you have a blood clot or infection it could be life threatening. DO NOT put heat on it.
