These people are nuts. What if their child died because of an ideal? Would that please God?

Excuse my lack of medical knowledge, but couldn't the blood for the tests that are actually needed to be done within the 48 hour period be extracted from the umbilical cord? If the cord is cut and is then ejected from the mother, then surely it isn't going to hurt anyone at all if the blood is taken from that! Ok, so it means a second follow up blood sample is taken later but is that a serious problem? Isn't two blood tests better than one? I'm sure the parents would have been happy to pay for the second test to be done.

The way I read the article the parents were trying to comfort their child after it was born. I believe there is well established link between childhood behavioral problems and birthing problems. I think they are loving parents in a very difficult situation. Instead of condemning them you should be supporting them. I think this is a clear case of not having explained the medical and legal processes to the parents prior to the event.
The parents didn't refuse to have it done, they said they didn't want it done within 3 and 1/2 days of birth. From what I read only one of the tests actually needed to be done prior to the 48 hours.

The link below actually says that the first 48 hours is the wrong time to do the blood test. It recommends waiting about a week before it is done (when the blood test takes a few minutes total time) because of dehydration problems which often occur within the first 24 to 36 hours of birth because of the change over from a blood based nutrient supply to a stomach based nutrient supply. When the baby is dehydrated the test can easily take up to 30 minutes and causes "emotional trauma" for the baby.
It sounds to me like the parents in this case could be doing the right thing!

The second link below is the legislation from Nebraska which states that if the test is done prior to 24 hours it has to be repeated within seven days.

Freedom Fighter, you're ignorant. Just like a lot of so called "Christians". You stereotype Muslims as terrorists or that they hate Americans/America. Not true. Only terrorists hate Americans/America. Not the Muslims, the terrorists.

And yes, they're crazy for going with religious beliefs over health of children.

The hypocrites probably got pre-natal care from doctors who practice modern medicine based on the theory of biological evolution, and I assume the birth occurred in a hospital (another temple to Satanic Scientific practices).

-------------------------------
Freedom Fighter --

As it turns out, Americas Founding Fathers specifically debated the possibility of Muslims in political office -- they determined that Muslims had the same rights as Atheists and Christians – they therefore have the same rights as you. George Mason said that the rights outlined in the Constitution were to be applied to all people, not just citizens. But hey, that was just the opinion of the men who wrote the constitution, huh?

In 1797, the US Congress unanimously passed the following into law (signed by Pres. John Adams):

 --- ARTICLE 11.
 ----As the government of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS NOT IN ANY SENSE FOUNDED ON THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION,-as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Musselmen [Muslims],-and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

shugodoth... – is right, you are ignorant.

Also, Christian fundamentalists (terrorists) are a greater threat to America than Islamic terrorists. Christian fundamentalists have clearly stated their intention to rewrite the US Constitution, thus destroying the nations secular democratic republic for of government and replacing it with a quasi-theocratic government based on Old Testament (rape-torture-kill) doctrine.

That is a tough one. I would have to go with beliefs which is really hard to say because I am an Atheist, But in this country(U.S.A.) the constitution allows for such religious freedoms and no matter how awful it may seem, I wouldn't trade for a most probable authoritarian alternative.

My children are more important to me than anything. I cannot imagine risking their health because someone (or some book) told me to.

At the same time, those people do have a right to practice their religion.

of course it is, but some people are so religious that they believe that God will fix everything for them. While i think that this, idealistically, is a wonderful notion, i do not think that it is the correct thing to do when it comes to your children.

Yes. But God is more important than your childrens' health. As much as I don't want to believe that last statement I just made, it is still true. God holds my children in His hands, because I already gave them over to Him. I know He has our best interests at heart, so I trust Him with their health, among pretty much everything else. I am not opposed to blood transfusions, by the way - I am VERY much for them. I would also do ANYTHING at all for my children - they would get the best medical care that we can afford, should something go wrong. Just because I trust God, doesn't mean I am forbidden to interfere with my childrens' health - He has blessed us with the ability to live in America, near excellent hospitals, and has blessed my husband with a good job and good health insurance. If I did not utilize the blessings He gave us, I would not really be very appreciative of them.

What idiots. I would wanna know if my child has a disease that severe that they test for. I think the child's health should be put above the parents wishes.
