It's my second pregnancy and I have never suffered from musclu cramps. I've got them twice in the two toes next to my big toe and woken up every morning for the last week with a cramp going down the back of my calf, alternating sides. My whole calf tenses up and I can't move it. The only thing that helps is holding my toes and pulling them back. I've heard that a lack of salt causes muscle cramps but my diet hasn't changed at all so I'd like some advice

I had the same problem, I increased my potassium and drank more water through the day. It did improve, but obviously I was still pregnant and it never went away completely until after I gave birth. The thing that helped me most in the middle of the night when my leg would cramp was to wake my husband up and he would rub it and I would tell him in great detail how much it hurt and what it felt like.

As the baby is enlarging, he/she is pressing on the nerves that go into the leg. Also pregnant women are more likely to have back problems due to the hormones released during pregnancy that relax the joints (called relaxin). This makes them more likely to get disc problems that can also press on these nerves causing the same symptoms.

Tell your OB/GYN so that he can evaluate you.

This could be because of muscle fatigue or dehydration. Try exercising all parts of your body. It also sometimes is due to disuse atrophy. Consult a doctor if it persists. You can also look for information in the web. I found this website very useful. http://aches.in/cramps.html

You need more fluids. The baby presses on
your stomach and makes you pee, whether you
want to or not. You also need potassium. Tell
you Dr. Eat a banana. God Bless.
