That depends on what you're shooting. Flash is good for between 6-12 feet. If what you're shooting is farther away, you need a brighter flash. When I shoot night football games, I use a big flash that cost about $1000. So, there is no easy answer to your question.

I use a 420EX on my G6. You can use any of the newer flashes, but some of them are very big and heavy for a camera that size.
