I disagree, look at the victorian era if you managed to raise all your children to adult hood you were considered very very lucky, most died a lot from scolding pans being knocked over, In the early times there were very little to no anesthetics so if you needed something amputated you got a leather belt to bite onto, doctors did not know about bacterial infections so they would operate on people in a normal room wearing their everyday clothes nothing was sterilized, sewerage leaked all over the streets so you wuld have to carry a small metal box to hold under your nose that had something of a sweet smell inserted, women were not allowed to walk on the side walks if so they were chained to a pole as a punishment, women had no rights were expected to cook clean raise chldren do everything and it didnt take a few minutes like it does now, washing would involve boiling water to have your hands in would take 2-3 hours non stop work, cooking was a lot slower and you could not freeze food like now days cooking would take often the entire day just for dinner along with beating out carpets and bedding whilst keeping an eye on small children.
People would die of things like the common cold which now days is something we do not even worry about with all our medicines and treatments most treatments were things such as opiates and cocaine so they were highly addictive men were allowed to beat their wives among other such things.
You think its stressful today? be grateful for what you have we have it so much better, we have a lot of political freedom we have things like microwaves and washing machines we so often take for granted we have medicines we do not live in fear our children will not make it to aged 5, a majority of people now die around aged 80+ back then death was amazingly common so much photographers were not for family portraits like they are now you used to take your child's body to the photographer and have them take a photo of them after their death and placed in a position to make it seem as though they are mearly sleeping that was probably one of the only family photographs you had you whole life was when death came.
Stress these days is nothing

I think we need someone in their 80's to answer this question. I agree people talk about it more than they used to. I think that people were probably pretty stressed out during the civil war, the great depression, when their 2 year old died of disease, etc. I think now the difference is people have fewer or no family members around to help them cope, and spend more time with the TV instead of around others. Look at this, here we are connecting on the Internet, but it is not the same as talking on the phone with a friend, or going bowling together. So there are some ideas.

I remember in college, we read this essay that talked about how the kids of today are lazy, can't apply themselves, don't respect their elders, get into trouble etc. etc. Everyone thought that yes, this was how things are. It turned out that Aristotle wrote that essay!!!!! It is easy to think that these times we live in are special and unique, but every time has had its own unique problems and human behavior and angst was the same.

I think people have always had stress. It is just a different kind depending what era you live in. I do believe however stress is increased in our culture and our time due to the media especially TV and the internet bombarding us with so much news constantly about bad things that can happen to us and bad things that happened to others and all the threats on the earth.
We are more aware of things to worry about than any generation has ever been.

Yes I agree they do suffer more from stress than those in the past but then you must look at the world in which we find ourselves today verus the past decades, we have technology that far surpasses those of a generation ago and the world now is more crowded and then there is the pressure to be more to buy more and to live faster and better so yes the stress factor is far more than in yesterdays

Yes a lot of people do. People are trying to do different things and get ahead. Kids are trying to grow up to fast and nothing is simple as use to be. People have not learned to enjoy what they have and been showed to alway want more. Until some people that are already nicely off learn to be content they will always be over stressed. They have not been shown or told that the only one that cause you stress is yourself.

You cannot generalize everybody's situation. Everyone is living in a different life, social economy, and has different cultural background. Thus, in every case is different.
