My suggestion would be to rest it for a while and give him children's advil for the pain if he needs it. If its swollen at all, then ice should help with the swelling, but if you think its muscular or a tendon, then heat would probably be better... if it doesnt get better within a week or two, take him to a doctor.

Pain and referred pain due to muscles are a field that medicine is under-educated in. Your local library might even have a book called The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. If it is not bone (x-rays will show) alignment (chiropractors preferably who use a tool called an activator instead of manipulation as the rule instead of the exception can help). Then this is your best bet.
Vitamins can help besides a good multi- consider Calcium Citrate (for the bones) with Magnesium (it helps regulate a lot of things).

Your son needs to see a doctor, and as soon as possible.
THis could be nothing, but pain in a limb or joint, with no injury, is not necessarily a good thing. Get that qualified medical opinion, YESTERDAY.
fortitudinousskeptic is far from correct, as a Baker's cyst is a complication of years of osteoarthritis of the knee.

Even IF someone with an M.D. answers your question, since they have not seen your son, nor know anything about him, it seems almost malpractice that they would give you any advice. Since you are the parent, I'd suggest you take him to a doctor for an exam and not risk his well being by relying on the respondents here on Answers. God Bless you.

I agree with the growing pains. My son is 13 and is now 6 feet tall. He complained of his legs and knees hurting all the time. We saw orthopedic doctors and had x-rays and physical therapist...it was just that his bones were growing faster than his muscles could keep up with, causing them to have alot of stain on them. Stretching exercises and ibuprofen.

Probably a growth spurt. Many children at that age grow. Usually when they are sleeping. I guess he started growing when he was out or at that time.
A way to treat this Is to stretch it out. (not too much) but dont let him bend the leg. Lying down would be good.
Dont take my word for it. If its a real intense pain, I wouldnt know

Very likely a "Baker's cyst".
Some kids have a problem with them for awhile and then grow out of it. Take the kid to a doc and ask and see if that's what it is.
