The Army now has a Special Forces Enlistment option.

18X - Special Forces Enlistment Option

Information about it is on the link below.

If you want the traditional method, Quinton B's answer was very good.

I am (was) a Ranger. Joining the infantry is a serious thing. Don't worry about Basic at Benning, with the rise of women and politics within the Army, its become a joke. There going to be days when you feel that accomplishing your goals are impossible, but never lose sight of them. You never know, someone may come along and see the world in you.

In regards to Ranger School and going SF, that decision may not be up to you, no matter what the recruiter tells you. The infantry is a bureaucracy like no other. You may have to have the blessing of your team leader, squad leader, platoon sergeant and platoon leader to even have a prayer of getting into Ranger School, Sniper School or other schools of that ilk. You don't just walk in and go Ranger just because YOU think you're ready. Just be fervent, be patient, and do all that is asked of you. For the most part you have to be an outstanding Soldier to get where you are going. Perception IS everything here. Stay out of trouble, stay in shape, get your EIB (Expert Infantry Badge), be proficient weapon your weapon and perform well in field problems. Road marches are very big here, make sure you never cheat while road marching, or it will show when it really counts (EIB). EIB is the key, get it, or give up.

SF recruiters hold open tryouts fairly often, so if you can manage to get into one (dependent upon your boss), you just may get there.

I say join, when its over you'll so proud of yourself and amazed at how fast it went by. If you care about benefits, you'll never find better. Save your money, get the GI Bill (w/ kicker), and don't get married just for the money.

Good luck, stay low, and keep firing.
Rangers lead the way.

you can join the infantry with the ranger or airborne option but not ranger school. the ranger option guarentees you the chance to prove your stuff at rip/ranger indoctrine process that will get you into a ranger battalion. from there, they will send you to ranger school. there are other guidelines to be offerred the 18x special forces recruit enlistment option. special forces and rangers are two different animals, just do some more homework on their history and look at what criteria special forces lists.

From the options you described your talking the US army. I'm Canadian but read the stuff comes up when you click on my name, your getting an outsiders point of view,

Best choice in the US army, you did do your reaseach. After you may want to consider officers school. It will change you but in 100s of subtle ways. Feel free to email me, if you want to talk in person Canada and Mainland US are not Long distance for me. We could talk serious or just have me tell funny storys ( all true most stupid ) I trained with US and Brits too including SF and SAS I even have some Prince Charles stories. Hearing 1st hand from men who were on course with him and who served under him. Gave me a new respect for him

One warning unless you choose to later go to officers school those 1st 3 courses will be the hardest thing you will ever do

back when I was 20 years old I wanted to be an MP but realized that they wouldn't accept me because I had asthma and today I have a heart problem so no matter what I could never go in the army. I mean its adventurous but it's also dangerous, I am signed up for selective service but like I said I can't join anyway I am kinda happy because I would never ever serve under George W. Bush.

This is a scary time to join and I admire anyone who makes that decision. Our country needs more brave men and women and if you feel that calling, then I think you should go for it. If you do, do it because you feel something deep inside you, not because of scholarship money or something like that (although those are definite benefits). To get you through training and future deploymennts, you would definitely need the intrinsic motivation.

You're a hero in my book!

An excellent choice for the short term or for a career. We were in for over 20yrs and loved it. Absolutely the best people in the world to work with (that includes all the services), lots of interesting career fields (many hi-tech), great training and the opportunity for advanced education. It’s a great chance to do something for your comrades, your country and yourself.

I joined the Army when I was 17 years old (10 years ago). I am still in and have fought proudly in two wars. The money and benefits are great and you would be doing something for your country instead of complainig like alot of theese fat stupid libs.
