It means that the kidneys are unable to filter the blood effectively. Useful proteins that are supposed to be retained in the blood leak through the kidneys and end up in the urine. This condition is called proteinuria. When leaking small amounts of protein, the kidney can usually recover if the cause is treatable. Once the leakage progresses to a certain point, the kidneys can no longer filter waste products out of the blood, and kidney failure eventually occurs.
