If it bends, it's funny; if it breaks, it's not funny

There are many facets to comedy, it is very subjective because comedy is judged by a persons taste and, what people find funny differs vastly. Good jokes usually contain elements of surprise, incongruity, conflict, and the effect of opposite expectations.
Some types of humor I enjoy:
Improv
Stand-up
One-liner
Surreal
Political Satire
Observational
Impressionism
Parody
Slapstick
Sketch
Dramedy

For my own stand-up routine I prefer a mix of one-liners, impressions, intellectual, surreal and observational. I find the best jokes are usually a combination.
I also prefer cleaner comedy, but I do not mind some lighter rude humor.
Half of the joke is how it is delivered, and the facial expressions of the comidian.

a little bit of truth always makes for a good joke - you know when the person is laughing - they are like, that's so funny cause it's true!

another thing is the joke should have some irony in it - it should take a little to figure out, but not enough where you have to explain it.

it doesn't necessarily have to be vulgar, but vulgar jokes tend to be sort of funny because they are taboo - you laugh a lot when your a kid but when your older not so much - that's why the vulgarity - it makes you feel like you are a kid - doing or saying something wrong.

A) great delivery;
B) sensible set-up;
C) engaging the listeners;
D) a punch-line that blindsides the listeners.
E) it does not have to be insulting

Bob Hope had a team of joke writers and secretaries who managed many file-cabinets filled with jokes....he could deliver.

well first a punchline but i think the most important thing about a good joke is your audience laughing at it right or its pointless.
and they person telling it has to make it funny i hate when people try to tell a joke and they dont really know how to tell it that ruins it

An audience with a sense of humor.
You can tell the funniest joke to single old women (living with cats) and they just won't laugh.
