Why do people toast bread?

What are the benefits of toasting bread (apart from heating the bread!)?

And on the other side of the coin - any negative effects of toasting bread?

Very odd inquiries. People toast bread as another way of eating it. I mean, come on, people eat potatoes fried, baked, mashed, with gravy, with butter etc... etc..... Variety is the spice of life, my friend.

Great question!
I suppose men have toasted bread from the beginning of time when they first baked the bread over an open fire....and then never stopped. There is something about eating something warm that has always been comforting to man. When you toast bread and then butter it and add the jelly or jam of your choice the butter starts to melt and the jam warms too. What a great experience when you pop this into your mouth compared to bread that is room temp. or cold with the same toppings.

The only negative effects would be if you didn't mind the toaster or set it too far to the dark side and you ended up with something you could not eat.

I love toasted bread of all kinds: white, wheat, raisin, cinnamon and French or Italian bread with garlic/butter and sprinkles of Parmesan cheese. I could go on and on why I love toasted bread!

like many foods, bread benefits from applying heat. sugars change their composition when heat is applied, that's why people grill meat instead of boiling it. direct application of heat carmelizes sugars.
plus i like the crunchy bite.
