I just had my first child born in Oct '06, I took epidural anesthesia when i was 2.5 cm dilated because of pain intolerance, and mine was a prolonged labor of 15 hours. Now, I have pain in my lower extremities, hip areas, thighs, and ankles. My mom has severe osteoarthritis, and her legs are curved towards in. NOW MY FEAR IS WHETHER I WILL ALSO GET THE SAME PROBLEMS AS OF MY MOMS' and IF MY PAIN IS BECAUSE OF THE EPIDURALS TAKEN DURING DELIVERY? I'm very much scared and concerned about this, Please answer me.
Ben.

You said you had a very difficult labor. More than likely the pain you are experiencing came from that. Childbirth is not always benign. Other things could be going on too, like a disc herniation or sacroiliac joint inflammation. See your doctor. You may benefit by getting a referral to a pain management specialist who is trained to diagnose and treat these type of problems.

The pain you are describing is one of the common after-effects of recieving epidural anesthesia, or any type of invasive proceedure done involving the spinal cord. SOme who have this side effect recover in a year or two, some have permanent problems. Your anesthetist may have improperly placed the catheter or you may have moved the wrong way during your prolonged labor that may have shifted the catheter and caused nerve aggrivation or damage. As for our family history of osteopathic problems, that may or may not have anything to do with this particular problem, as what your mother has is usually congenital (when was the onset of her problems [age of onset]?) But it sounds to me like this is all related to your epidural. As for a remedy to your problem, seek doctors advise on pain management and a nerve conductivity test to discover if there is any nerve damage.

Referred pain - there is a chance since the medical field has not done much homework on muscles that you could find relief in a book my chiropractor recently told me about- The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.
Hoping you success.
