My five year old has a complete set of 20 teeth, including her two sets of molars, and she has swollen gums behind her molars and it appears to be a tooth coming in. You can feel the tooth. I have researched the topic but nothing states that a five year old can have a wisdom tooth coming in. I am going to contact our dentist but I would sure appreciate your input on our problem.

sounds like she is just getting her adult teeth early.
I'd say it is fine and would take her to a dentist as regularly as normal

at about the age of 6 a child will start to grown their 6's which is their first permenant molar. a wisdom tooth is the last tooth to come through which are the 8's and that normally happens about the age of 18 though some adults may never have their wisdom teeth

It is likely that this is a normal event. At around her age the first permanent molar usually starts to come out. This may result in some swelling and discomfort for the overlying gums. That's usually normal. Is it present on both side of the jaw? Incidentally, aside from the first, there's going to be a second and third molar that will come out later in life. It's a good idea of course to let a dentist see the condition to rule out other conditions. Dental radiographs (x-rays) will probably be taken to assist in the evaluation.

Its not a wisdom tooth.
Are you sure she only has 20 teeth and not 22?
The adult mouth has 32 teeth. Children have 20 teeth until they are between 5 and 8 years of age and then grow another 4 back teeth. The wisdom teeth dont come through till much later.
There is no need to contact a dentist.
Im surprised you didnt know this.

This is happening to my 5 1/2 year old now. I thought it was his wisdom teeth as well. I did not know that the permanent molars would come in before the primary ones fell out. I thought they came up under the baby molars and pushed those out. So I learned something new!

Based on you description, she is getting her 1st permanent molars (6 year molars). Little girls develop more quickly than little boys, so they often get their teeth earlier and boys a little later. Normal.

6 year molars . . .no biggie. Her two lower front teeth will probably become loose soon if they are not already. They are not her wisdom teeth.
