It's like a bird period.

Female birds lay infertile eggs if they think it is mating season. Normally, during mating season they will mate with a male bird and then lay fertile eggs, but if the bird thinks some other person or object is a mate she may lay the (infertile) eggs without another bird mate. This is how we get chicken eggs in the grocery store. It's somewhat like how adult human women menstruate instead of getting pregnant.
If you have a pet bird, it is a good idea to discourge her from laying eggs, as this can be bad for her health. Make sure her cage is covered with a sheet or towel and dark for 12 hours a day, as then she'll think it's winter and not mating season. If she appears to be rubbing her butt against any toys or person, she thinks she's mating with it, and you should remove that object so she doesn't continue to do so.
Too much egg laying will make her loose calcium in her bones, and she could end up with egg-binding. That's where she tries to lay the egg but can't, like when a human woman would need a C-section. The egg gets stuck inside her and can break and cut up her insides, hurting her and possibly even leading to her death.

One is you can't stop it.
Other people are saying you can, but God designed the Earth, not us.
First off, as I said before you can't really stop her it is a normal occurence.
Second thing is, If you have a nest box in the cage then take it out. That will stop her from laying a whole clutch.
Third part, is I own a cockatiel hen and if she tries to lay an egg, it falls and cracks. She likes to sit on her perch when she lays an egg. If the egg drops and cracks open, she will probably leave it alone.
Fourth piece of advice is, If you don't have a nest box in there and she slowly stops to reduce her egg laying, then your problem is probably fixed. Otherwise at a few bigger pet companies (Like Petco, Petsmart, or Foster & Smith) they sell special breeder formulas. It helps give the hen all the vitamins she will be losing be laying eggs.
Last but not least, I hope my information helped.

Hi there. many birds do this because of hormonal influences. Chicken eggs in the store are infertile. Sometimes, long day light hours can trigger egg laying in females. All birds need 10-12 hours of darkness a day for rest. Have a tweet year.

This is a natural process for birds. Get this, even though she lays eggs it does not mean she can have baby birds even if a male has his way with her. Some birds will even lay eggs so often it can affect her health. Some people recommend putting fake plastic eggs in the cage to prevent this.

My sister used to have a female cockatiel that sometimes layed infertile eggs. The reasons that I know of for this is sometimes if she gets too much sunlight they lay infertile eggs, or if she has layed infertile eggs and you remove them too soon (any less than several days or a week) she will lay more to compensate for the losses. If she lays too many there is a risk of calcium defficiency or egg binding.

All females ovulate. Just as eggs in female human are released each month and not used even if they aren't with a human male, birds will lay eggs with their male counterpart.

Like people don't lay infertile eggs once a month? *chuckle* It's just that for us, rather than needing a shell and albumin and yolk... wow... now I'm kinda wishing I was a bird....

Did you know that birds have all of the eggs in them that they will ever lay. So they automatically lay them regardless of whether they have been fertilised or not.
