Instead of installing 98 on a new system, which you will more than likely NOT be able to find drivers for the hardware to support 98, why dont you download FOR FREE Open Office which is every bit as good as MS Office.

The way computers are made is the newer the computer, the older programs work well on them. They are, of course, designed mainly for the newer Windows types, but some older programs are just fine. Microsoft Word should work just fine whether it is 98 or 03. The differences would probably exist in templates and some of the features like drawing and database, etc. But either way, you can update it to a newer version along the way. The newer programs are designed to make it relatively easy to switch years. If that doesn't work, then try uninstalling the older program before installing the newer one. Also, you don't have to install the whole Windows 98' set. You just need a Microsoft Office disc set from any year. It's a whole lot less hassle to just install an older version of a program than the actual operating system itself. Later on as well, since Windows Vista Home Pro. has just come out (I think either today or yesterday), you can upgrade directly to it instead of the go-betweens like 03, etc. I recommend this even if you don't switch back to a 98' operating system. The tester reviews are pretty good.

I assume when you say Windows 98 you want to install Microsoft Word 98 on a PC with an XP operating system.
This should work. Give it a try. Worst case is it will interfere with a device driver and your PC will not work any more. It that case you start it in Safe Mode and un-install Word 98.

Windows XP will probably be able to run Word '98, there's no reason to install a new Operating System (Microsoft makes most of their stuff backwards compatible)

Put in your '98 CD and open it TO SEE (not run) the files you may find the install file Word if so you should be able to install it separately without reverting back to '98
