I actually just saw one the other day. The show I watched was Re-Design, and they just went over the brick with some more grout. If you have more than a quarter of an inch tho make sure that you use sandy grout, it will make it stick better. Just put it on like you would grout tile on a floor or wall, and take or leave as much as you'd like for a white washed look. I hope this helps you out.

Not done it because the people had acquired that old brick type of look when the chimney was build. How to do it, you need a watered down outside latex and brush it on the bricks and maybe do it again the next day or two (depends on the dry conditions) after the first get time to dry. Use a 4" brush and try not to get everywhere. So you get that weathered look -some of it has 2 coats , some has 1 coat and some none.

I would just use a watered down white water-based paint or glaze to get the "old brick" look. Wipe it off gently as you go to let the brick show but leave enough on the bricks to make them look old and dusty. As porous as brick is I would suggest using a white glaze because the paint will "bite" the brick more. Glaze allows you to play with it more to achieve the look you want.

You can use a masonry stain. Sherwin Williams handles those. First you etch with muriatic acid, then you apply the masonry stain to the surface using a special roller that they sell. Then you seal it with a sealer. Im not pushing SherwinWilliams lots of paint stores sell that stain.

We had a red brick house. It looked outdated. We stained it in this manner to a "frosted" white. That was 10 years ago and the it still looks great. Last year, i stained my back concrete patio that was old and discolored to bring it back to good condition.
