If your couch has never been cleaned, you should do that first. You can rent a Rug Doctor w/ attachments for this at grocery stores.

You should spray the couch down w/ Outright Solution before you clean: http://www.upco.com/cgi-bin/Upcol.storefront/45bd40ec015f9612ea6dc0a80a2f06ee/Product/View/11046
I've used this product for decades and it take out the scent, doesn't just cover it up.

Once you get your couch clean and smelling nice again, you need to keep your dog off of it, so it will stay that way :)

To keep your dog off the furniture, there are several options. One is this: http://www.safepetproducts.com/product.asp?specific=jnnrcml4

There are other types of mats that are less expensive and are more passive: http://www.amazon.com/X-Mat-Original-Pet-Training-Mat/dp/B0006G4V5I

Good luck! :)

febreeze works pretty good they have febreeze for pet odors etc* you may also want to get some carpet freshener and put it on your couch and vaccume it thats what i used to do. If the smells continue there is some Good pet odor stuff at petsmart.
Good luck.
ps. baking soda works good just sprinkle the couch down let it sit for a bit and vaccume it up.

Heres an idea... Try to Give your dog a bath Before you febreeze the couch... otherwise (he or She) will get back on the couch and you will have to repeat the febreeze process over again.

get a carpet shampooer with an attachment for cleaning upolstery, and make sure shampoo is "pet odor and soil." May take 2-3 cleanings.

Febreze (I love the stuff!)

It's pet friendly, and removes odors from fabrics.

It makes my house with two cats (two litterboxes) and one not-fully-housetrained puppy smell so much better.

You also might try steam cleaning your couch with the upholstery attachment.

You will probably need to recover the furniture to make it completely smell free but as long as the dog is in the house it will always have a slight odor.
