should i wear a helmet in my western class or a cowboy hat?

Good question! These hats look good and are becoming very popular. The Troxel Western Trail series has several options, is ventilated and meets the SEI ASTM regs. Others look nice too,
I like the colored ones since they seem to be subtle yet classy.. just what the judges will say of you! 4-H uses helmets in english and western, US pony club never goes without,and with hats this classy and cool feeling, it says "I care".
You can get fitted at any tack shop, then either buy there or search best prices on line. Shops often take that best price and give it to you there:) Ride happy! and hey good luck!!

Always always always wear a helmet!
Horses are unpredictable animals. Even the sweetest, calmest, "bombproof" horse can spook or fall and you can get hurt.
Horseback riding is not a place to let fashion come first. It is much more important to be safe, than to have the best looking hat!
I have been riding for 13 years, and am a very experienced rider. I always wear a helmet. It is not that I think I will fall, it is that I know horses can be unpredictable.
Nowadays, helmets are not the heavy, hot, uncomfortable things they used to be 13 years ago. They now have very lightweight and comfortable helmets, and in a variety of colors and styles and prices.
So please, please wear a helmet, especially if you are not an experienced rider. If this is a show class, it is even more important because at a show, there are a lot more distractions for the horse and it is often an unfamiliar territory for them, so they may be more apt to spook.

WEAR A HELMET. I cannot emphasize this enough. If you value your brain, wear one. You will see many wearing a cowboy hat, but don't follow. They are comfortable, and may save your life. They have saved mine several times while jumping, and when I'm out on the trail. Get a certified helmet and wear it proudly! They will protect you from head on injuries, and I doubt you will get points deducted, as many people wear them now.

Helmet. When I judge I secretly root for those wearing helmets to do better because they are smarter
sorry this will seem like over kill, but I have know a few people who decided they were good enough to ride without helmets get seriouly injured and even die. Please be safe

i would say cowboy hat if you know how to ride good although most people would say i helmet but i think that if you know how to ride there is no need for one i have been riding for four years adn i ride very fast and the people that does fall off are drunk and no one ever gets hurt beyond a hurt arm or leg plus cowboy hats are to die for i love them.
