Alternative to Incarceration involves a person who, instead of going to prison or jail, goes into a voluntary program such as a drug and alcohol, anger management, or any theriputic program that is satisfactory to the Court. In some cases the program may be an in-patient or out-patient program.

Parole, rehab for drug crimes, anger management for abuse crimes, community service for nonviolet offenders, financial restitution in theft or fraud cases, home confinement with electronic bracelet.
Which of these may apply is determined by the laws, the judge and what the district attorney's are willing to accept.
Many times these can be negotiated before a verdict occurs in plea bargaining between your lawyer adn the DAs.

Execution. It may not prevent crime, but it will sure cut down on repeat offenders.
